Like with anything in life, sometimes things come and easy, and sometimes they take a little work.  Today I went on a search and recovery mission for some missing points of mine.  Two of the missions I went out on were for some M.I.A. SPG (Starwood Preferred Guest) points and some M.I.A. Onepass miles. I’ll talk some here about my elusive SPG points.

The Starwood brand includes hotels such as: The W, Westin, Sheraton, and Aloft (among others) and I am a big fan of many of their hotels.  Their “frequent stayer” program, SPG, is also pretty great in my book.  They have a cool program called “Green Choice” where for each night you decline housekeeping you can either get a $5 voucher towards food in the hotel, or 500 bonus SPG points.  In my case (and hopefully in yours!), I always select the 500 bonus points.  In return, all you have to do is tidy up your own bed and hang up your own towels.  You save electricity, water, chemical use, etc…….all while earning valuable SPG points!  You obviously can’t do this on the night before you are going to check out because your room clearly has to be cleaned on the day you check out.  I mean, I don’t plan on using your dirty towels.  🙂

A few weeks ago I participated in this program at the Westin in Austin and patiently waited for my precious points to appear in my SPG account.  I decided earlier this week that they were not going to magically appear, so I called the hotel directly and explained the situation.  They were going to look into it and call me back.  48 hours later I called again and the same woman I spoke to previously answered and remembered that her manager instructed her to attach it to my next stay that will take place in a few weeks.  My fingers are crossed that it will work as promised!

This part of point and mile collecting frankly stinks like monkey tail, but it is important to stay on top of what you have earned and follow-up when the precious points and miles don’t appear as promised.  My two calls combined took no more than about 3 minutes, and the outcome is hopefully 500 points toward my next free night.  As a point of reference, most of the Starwood hotels I frequent cost between 7,000 and 10,000 SPG points per night, so 500 points is a big step towards free hotel-ing!  The current promo on the SPG Amex is up to 25,000 bonus points for signing  up.  That would easily cover a few free nights at some good hotels.  Additionally, you can earn 4 points per dollar spent at Starwood hotels (5 points per dollar if you are a SPG Gold or Platinum member).  So, by having the SPG Amex and using the Green Choice promo,  your $150 per night 3-night stay Starwood stay would convert to 2800 points!  That’s $150 x 3 nights = $450 x 4 points per dollar = 1800 points + 1000 Green Choice points (500 per night for the first two nights) = your 2800 points.

You can see how quickly the points can add up!  I am seriously considering the SPG Amex for my next credit card!
