United “Months of Miles Challenge” – Targeted

I hesitate to post about targeted deals, but I just get too excited about United/Continental miles to not share this one.  There also seem to be a fair number of targeted folks, at least according to the Flyertalk thread that I quickly read, so I decided to share the good news!

I received an email late last night from United that talks about their MileagePlus – Months of Miles Challenge.  Basically, you get bonus miles for every x number of transactions you make with their partners.  There are different versions of this deal out there.  I am aware of these versions:

  • 1,000 bonus miles for every 2 transactions
  • 1,000 bonus miles for every 3 transactions – I got this one
  • 500 bonus miles for every 4 transactions

The list of partners that can count towards earning transactions is pretty substantial.  It includes hotel and rental cars, but also their shopping and dining programs.  Shopping via the United shopping portal and utilizing their United MileagePlus Dining program are where you can really rack up the transactions quickly!  The terms say that retail transactions must be of at least $10 (excluding tax and shipping) to count.  The above referenced Flyertalk thread lists some quick ways to start racking in high numbers of transactions such as ordering gift cards from retailers via the shopping mall – (careful though, gift cards are excluded for some retailers).  Here is a screen shot from the promo that highlights available retailers.  Though, the United credit card seems to be excluded, so not sure why it is shown?!

I don’t plan to make transactions solely for the purpose of up-ing my transaction count for this promo, but I will be giving a strong preference to eating at restaurants that participate in the United Dining Program and making my online purchases through the United Shopping portal through November 20th.  My family can easily bring in several extra thousand miles per month for the next few months thanks to this promotion!

Check your email carefully to see if you or any of your family members were targeted for this promo.  I have no status with United and only earn United miles through their shopping and dining programs.  The “targeted audience” for this one seems to be all over the map.  From non-status UA members (like me) to 1K (elite) United flyers.  Fingers crossed that you were targeted as well!  🙂

If you are interested in the “nitty gritty”, here is a copy of the Terms and Conditions.

Now it’s time to decide which United dining partner I will be selecting to eat lunch with today.  Decisions, decisions!

Were you targeted for this promo?  Which version did you get?  What will you be doing to make the most of this promotion?

  1. Nice, after reading this post i checked my inbox to find a similar 1000 bonus miles for 3 transactions. Thanks for the heads up.

  2. I got the 500 miles for every 4 transactions (I’m a 1K). Also, I think it’s good to post targeted offers to show how they might differ, and I’m glad I read yours today. 🙂

  3. I got the 500 for every 3 transactions (just drained my United account into my Cont. account), my husband got the 500 for every 4 transactions (he has the most points in his account) and my son got the 1000 for every three transactions in his account.

  4. I did not get this email…(yet) as I just registered but I did get a 1,000 bonus award miles when I spend $50 or more at a participating restaurant, bar or club in the next 30 days but no later than December 31, 2011. This was for filling out my online dining profile!

  5. @Chris, thanks for sharing. I will get the 3 for 500 option up on the post soon. I hadn’t yet seen that option!
@DGuy, glad you found the promotion in your inbox!
@Darren, I am glad that it was helpful for you!
@worldtraveller2, isn’t it interesting to see who gets selected for which offer! Looks like your son was the big winner. 🙂
@Cindyt, I love that dining promo. It is what first got me hooked on their dining program. I plan to post specifically about the dining program in the next couple of days. It really is a great program!

  6. I received the 1000 miles for every 2 transactions. No elite status on United, however I’ve made a couple of short round trips in the past month, lax-sfo.

btw, I love the banner at the top of your page! This is my first time on the actually boardingarea site since I mostly read your blog posts off of my rss reader on my phone.

    • Congrats on getting the “best offer”! Thanks for sharing that info with us. Also thanks for reading the blog and your comment about the banner!

  7. Thanks for the heads up on this one. Check my mail & I got it too. Not so great a deal as others. 4 transactions=500 miles. Might be good if I find some cheap deals. Have to read the thread. Thanks for the info.

    • It is harder without many dining options. We have a few where I live, but not many. I am very grateful for the few we do have!

  8. When the T&C’s say that you need to spend $10 with a retail partner does that include the dining partners? Do we need to spend at least $10 on a dine to be valid for this promotion?

    • Jacob, the criteria for being targeted on this one seems to be anyone’s guess. Obviously, you need to be a United MileagePlus member. It seems to help if you have some activity in your account. I only had dining and shopping purchases, no actual flights. However, even some of their top tier elite flyers got targeted…..while others didn’t. In general, just be a member, allow communication from the airline (ie, don’t opt out of all emails), and cross your fingers. Wish I had a more definitive answer for you!

  10. Stan, I actually just received an email for a reader who was not targeted, but was also able to register for the 2/1000, and he tried to verify it with United and they are asking for proof that he was solicited via email. So, I would say it is iffy as to whether or not it will work out. I would save screen shots and probably not go overboard trying to rack miles up unless you could get some sort of verification from United that the promo is indeed linked to your account. GL and keep me posted! (No worries about the caps!)
