As was somewhat expected/hoped, many other airlines are matching the Southwest fare sale that was announced earlier today.  Gotta love some competition!

In short, the Southwest sale offers one-way flights for $35, $65, $95, or $125 based on the distance of the flight.  You must purchase your tickets by 10/20/11 for flights 11/30/11 – 12/14/11 and 1/4/12 – 2/15/12.  Check out this post for more info on the sale.

While I think that there are some real benefits to flying Southwest, especially for families, I know that some people prefer other airlines.  The main reason that I personally usually choose another airline over Southwest is simply because the airport that they serve in my area isn’t as convenient as the airport that many of the other airlines serve.  If Southwest flew into the airport that is closest to my home, I would fly them more often.  Regardless, the fact that other airlines (Delta, American, Continental, Jet Blue, and more) are matching the fares on many routes means that you can fly on your carrier of choice while still saving some cash!

You can read more about some of the airline matches on this thread.  As with all airline sales, they change quickly, so don’t delay.  If you find a flight that works for you, book it before the chance is gone.  Also, remember that if you have any trips booked on points or dollars with Southwest for the sale dates that you can re-book for the lower cost!  That way you will have a credit to use on a future flight.  That is one of the best features of Southwest!

  1. One might have better luck with AirTran out of their local airport if Southwest does not service them. Since Southwest owns AirTran, they are having the same sale, which often times services other airports not currently in Southwest’s lineup.
