We all know I love points, and if you are reading this I am guessing you love collecting and using points, too! While the majority of what I write about here is related to getting or spending points for your family, I also like to turn the focus a bit more outward at times and help support some other endeavors as well. Today I am honored to get the chance to help support Passports with Purpose. Passports with Purpose is in its fourth year. In 2010 they raised nearly $65,000 to help construct 25 well-built homes in a small village, Karunganni, in South India. That may seem like a small number, but it made all the difference for those families, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of travel blog readers such as yourself.
This year they are raising money for Room to Read and will be building libraries in Zambia. As a mom, I have seen my toddler’s eyes light up when she is able to read books. She is blessed with virtually her own personal library, but that isn’t the case for all children. I am very excited to help bring books to the children in Zambia. Sometimes the world seems too large to make a difference, but I am a firm believer that every little bit helps and you have to start somewhere. I can imagine not only how important these books will be to the children, but also how excited some of the parents of these children will be to see them learning and enjoying the books. Passports with Purpose gives you a chance to not only help make a difference for these families, but to also give yourself a shot to win a great travel related prize in the process.
All of the 100+ travel bloggers involved in this effort have either secured a prize from a sponsor or donated a prize themselves. With the exception of a small amount used to cover PayPal transaction fees, all of the money collected goes directly to the Room to Read organization. Best Western has graciously agreed to be the Passports with Purpose sponsor for Mommy Points this year! They have donated a $100 gift card that will go to the randomly selected winner among all those who enter to win this prize by making a $10 donation to Passports with Purpose. More on how to enter in a minute.
I think that Best Western has some real hidden gem properties for families. Not only are Best Western hotels often more affordable than some of the other hotel chains, they are also located near many family-friendly destinations, they often feature pools (quite a few have waterparks), and they provide complimentary breakfast. All of the Best Western properties offer complimentary high-speed Internet. Breakfast and internet fees can really add up at hotels where they aren’t included, so this is a huge plus for Best Westerns! I asked Best Western to share a few photos of some of their family-friendly hotels; here are a few that they shared with me.
First up is their Best Western Cavalier Oceanfront Resort that is San Simeon, California’s, only oceanfront hotel, and is a short drive to neighboring Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo.
Next is an example of one of the great family-oriented pools that some Best Westerns have. This one can be found at the Best Western Plus Bloomington Hotel that is located in Bloomington, MN, home to the Mall of America. This is also very close to Nickelodeon Universe, the country’s largest indoor amusement park.
The last picture they shared was of the Best Western Premier Helena Great Northern Hotel in Helena, Montana. This hotel is located near the famous Parrot Candy Store with more than 130 types of candy and the Exploration Works Interactive Museum that offers free admission on select days.
My parents frequent many Best Westerns, especially on their road trips, and I am strongly considering getting them a Best Western gift card as one of their Christmas presents (shhh, don’t tell). Each Best Western gift card purchase of $100 (USD) through 12/31/11 will also entitle you to choose one of these additional awards: $10 (USD) Amazon.com Gift Card, $10 Best Buy gift card, $10 Walmart gift card, $10 Darden® Restaurants gift card (Redeemable at Red Lobster®, Olive Garden®, LongHorn Steakhouse®, Bahama Breeze®, Seasons 52® or any other Darden restaurant in the U.S.), or a $10 Best Western Travel Card. If I decide to get this card for my parents, I will probably take the $10 Best Western card to bring the total to $110. This is more than enough for a night at many Best Western hotels!
