Donate Money (or Earn Money) For Free via Amex and Twitter

Admittedly I have been a bit too busy the last few days (trying to work from home to care for a kid who is home from daycare with pink-eye) to pay much attention to the new American Express Twitter promotions. However, when Dan’s Deals emailed me today to point out that I could donate money to the Austin Children’s Shelter for free, and get paid $5.00 for doing so, I made time to learn about the Amex Twitter promos in a hurry.  These deals so far aren’t explicitly travel related, but I figured many of us have Amex cards and like free money and/or helping others.

In my “day job” I have had many interactions with the Austin Children’s Shelter, and they are a top-notch facility, so I was happy to help them out. Here’s how you can donate $5 to them, and earn a $10 statement credit (so $5 profit for you) – or just donate $10 to them without keeping any for yourself.

1. Sync an American Express card to Twitter. Remember which card you sync, so that you are sure to use that one when you make your purchase.

2. Tweet @AmericanExpress #AmexAustin10 – you must include the @AmericanExpress portion as well as the hash tag portion.  If you did it correctly, you will get a tweet back under the @Connect section of Twitter.  While you are at it, you might as well tweet @AmericanExpress #AmexTix50 to get $50 a $100 Ticketmaster purchase.

Update:  You may just need the hash tag and not the @AmericanExpress part.  Less time tweeting and more time getting free money.  😉

3. Make a purchase in Austin today (expires 3/13) and receive a $10.00 statement credit. Clearly there are tons of ways to accomplish that – especially if you are in Austin, but one way is to go to the Austin Children’s Shelter online and donate at least $5 (the minimum you can donate). I donated $10 since I really like them, and figure it is free money anyway, but if you want a nice little profit for yourself, donate $5. 😉

4. Within a few minutes you will get a receipt from the ACS thanking you, and then a few minutes after that you will get an email from Amex saying:

Congratulations! By using your synced American Express® Card ending in xxx09, you
saved $10.00 on your purchase at an Austin retailer. Expect a statement credit in 3-5 days.

Super quick, super easy, and super good for others (and yourself).  Reportedly the Jewish Federation of Austin also works.  I’m sure there are other stores and charities that work as well – so feel free to add any you used in the comments section.  While you are in Twitter World, feel free to follow me @Mommy_Points.

  1. @MP – I really enjoy your blog even though my kids no longer need me to look after their travel needs – well, at least not very much :-). I’m certainly no Twitter expert, but I just signed up for the Amex Ticketmaster promo before I read your blog and did NOT have to include @AmericanExpress in my tweet, just the #AmexTix50. I received the tweet back from @AmexSync that I was enrolled, so am pretty confident that it worked.

    Keep up the great blogging!

    • @SteveA, glad you like the site! All are welcome, little kids not required. 😉 Thanks for the @AmericanExpress info – it didn’t work for me that way when I accidentally tried it, but maybe I just didn’t wait long enough before deleting and doing it again. I updated the post to reflect that you just need the hash tag part – thanks! Enjoy the Ticketmaster promo, amazing deal!

  2. Are you sure about the Best Buy $10 / $10? It’s now saying $10 / $100. 🙁

    • @MJL, there were two Best Buy promos. One for $10 off a $10 purchase and one for $10 off a $100 purchase. Looks like the $10 off $10 is now maxed out as of some time in the last hour or so. I’ll update the post accordingly. Congrats to those who got in!

  3. How could I pass up the opportunity to donate to a really worthy cause? Thanks! $10 from me. And I can always use the tax deduction.

  4. Didn’t see the ticketmaster one earlier so a big thanks for that..glad I delayed my purchase I almost spent $150 there this afternoon!

    • @Rachel, oh that stinks! Sorry! Follow me on Twitter @Mommy_Points and hopefully you can catch the next deal in time. 😉

  5. Here’s another one for you (I don’t recall seeing it on your blog before) — Tweet #AmexWholeFoods for $20 Amex statement credit on $75 purchase at Whole Foods. Offer is good through 4/30/12.

Nice if you like to shop at their stores and one is close enough.
