Reminder: Last Day for Q1 Freedom Bonus

This morning I totaled up our spending at Amazon and gas stations from January 1 through today and found out we had spent $1507 (at least on our Freedom card).  I was actually excited since $1500 is the maximum you receive 5x points on for purchases in those categories from January 1 – March 31st on the Chase Freedom card. (assuming you activated the bonus this quarter)

We didn’t spend any “extra” in those categories because of the the quarterly bonus, but we made sure to maximize the purchases we were going to make anyway.  I’ll take 7,500 Ultimate Reward points for purchases we had to make anyway any day of the week (or in this case, quarter of the year).

So, just a quick reminder to total up your purchases in those categories on your Freedom card from January 1st through today (yes, you have to do it manually by looking at your transactions online).  While I don’t recommend spending more than you were going to spend anyway just to get bonus points, if you were running low on gas, or want to stock up on Amazon gift cards for purchases you were going to make in the future, it may be a good time to make those purchases if you have a Freedom card.  I will provide a brief warning that based on what I could find online, some gas station gift card purchases count, but some don’t. It all seems to depend on how it is coded by the gas station, however Amazon gift cards purchased from seem to have a good success rate in counting toward the 5x bonus.

You can learn more about the second quarter bonus categories that start tomorrow: check out this post.  Happy shopping!

  1. Thank you! This completely slipped my mind. I just started spending on my Freedom card, so I had the whole $1,500 to spend today. Bought an Amazon gift card.

  2. I use kmymoney to keep track of spending. There is a bunch of other programs out there as well. It turns out all banks in the US will let you export statements in quicken format which is very easy to import into these programs. I then use Kmymoney to generate a report of my freedom grocery speding.

  3. If we bought amazon gift card on 31st, it will not post until a few days after. Will it still qualify for the bonus?
