5,000 Free and Easy Membership Rewards Points for Amex Business Cards

This isn’t brand new information, but I wanted to try it out for myself before posting it to make sure it worked without being targeted – especially since some previous versions of this turned out to not always automatically post if you weren’t actually targeted.  Currently Amex is awarding 5,000 bonus Membership Reward points for enrolling your Membership Rewards earning business charge card for their extended payments option.  It costs nothing to enroll, and you don’t have to ever use the option in order to get the bonus points for enrolling.  This did not result in a hard credit pull.

I don’t actually plan to pay out my purchases on this card over time, but I think this promo is fantastic since it is free, seems to not be targeted (at least I know I wasn’t targeted), and the points posted within a week or two or registering my Business Gold Rewards card without any action on my part.

If you just got in on the now expired two-day 75,000 Membership Rewards sign-up bonus for the Gold Business Rewards Amex, consider this your formal reminder to add 5,000 more points to your total. I will likely sit on my Membership Reward points until another transfer bonus to British Airways rolls around, or I may even use them to book a flight on United through Singapore Airlines’ frequent flyer program a la “One Mile at a Time” style.  Regardless of how you use them, 5,000 free Membership Reward points is always a welcome bonus!

If you are curious, here are the details related to this offer:

1 Card member must be eligible to enroll in the Extended Payment Option at the time of requesting enrollment.

2 To be eligible to earn 5,000 Membership Rewards® points you must enroll in the Extended Payment Option (EXPO) by 12/31/2012, and be enrolled in the Membership Rewards® program at the time of EXPO enrollment. 5,000 points will be credited to your Membership Rewards® account 6 to 8 weeks after enrollment in EXPO. The 5,000 points offer is available only for new enrollees. If you are currently enrolled in EXPO, or if you were previously suspended from EXPO, or if we receive your application for EXPO enrollment after 12/31/2012, the point offer will not be available. Bonus ID 8548.

Terms and Conditions for the Membership Rewards® program apply. Visit membershiprewards.com/terms or call 1-800-AXP-EARN (297-3276) for more information. Participating partners and available rewards are subject to change without notice.

3 Any charge that would result in an account balance of $35,000 or more will not be eligible for extended payment.

If you have gotten in on this deal, I would love to hear how it worked out for you.

  1. Aren’t you concerned that since an EXPO increases AMEX’s risk exposure to yourself, that enrolling in EXPO increases the likelihood they would choose you for a Financial Review?
    My wife was chosen for a Financial Review about 2 months after she enrolled her cards in EXPO…and there were no changes in her spending pattern. I never enrolled and have not been subject to a Financial Review. Coincidence? Maybe.

  2. FYI: I recently applied and was denied. When I called AMEX, they said the reason I was denied was b/c you had to be invited. Anyone else have this problem? It’s dumb b/c I don’t think you should have the option to apply online if you’re not considered invited.

  3. @William, ever since my mom had a financial review with Amex last year even though her account had to be one of the lowest risk accounts out there, I haven’t really worried about how they select their targets. I think lots of stuff the miles and points community does makes us bigger targets (multiple accounts, multiple users, etc). Just kind of bad luck when your number comes up, but you just deal with it and move on. So, not a big concern for me. If it is a big concern for someone, I recommend not really playing ball with Amex cards at all.
    @Vard, a couple weeks.
    @Jeanne, thanks for sharing!
    @grm1231, that is the first I have heard of that with this particular offer. Thanks for sharing!
    @Jon, good to hear!
    @Jeff, yeah this offer is for business cards that earn Membership Rewards points.

  4. It accepted my enrollment, now the wait. Thanks so much. I was in the negative membership points from the previous ba bonus transfer. Thanks again

  5. MP: I previously had an AMEX gold, and had received the 5,000 points for Extended Pay (EP) about a year ago. Since then, I’ve gotten an AMEX Platinum and AMEX Biz gold. About two months ago, ran across a FlyerTalk posting that reminded me about EP. I didn’t think I’d be eligible since I’d already received the bonus before, but went ahead and signed both up. I checked my MR balance last week and had 10,000 bonus points (5,000 for each card) for EP.

    No reason not to do this–free points and actually a useful service if you ever need it.

  6. I applied for the 5000 points after I had the Premier Rewards Gold card for about 3 months. Amex told me that I wasn’t eligible for the offer, as eligibility required the card to be open for 6 months prior to applying. Sure enough, I applied again at the 7 month mark, and received the 5000 points a few weeks later.

  7. I sent this message to Lucky, earlier today, but I see that you are on topic with MR, so I thought you might be interested as well.

    A tip on the Amex/Bose (2,500 MR point)demo offer. This offer was originally meant for only Bose Showcase stores, but it has been expanded to all Bose stores. The FS near Concord, NC had not heard about the promo when I visited, but agreed to give me the demo, take my info. (email address, name. etc.), give me the demo and look into it. They called me a few days later and said that, due to the unexpected response, the promo was being expanded to all Bose stores. Today, I received my points certificate by email from Amex with directions which I followed to redeem online. You will need a certficate number (which you receive by email) and a MR enrolled Amex card to redeem.

    The key points are:

    1. The promo is available at all Bose stores (not just Showcase stores)
    2. The Bose store you go to may not be aware of this. Make sure they get your email address.
    3. The points are redeemed after receiving a certificate that will be emailed to you. In my case, it was about 2 weeks after the demo.

    Anyway, I hope this helps. I think a lot of people were bummed because it appeared that it would not be available through a FS.

  8. Aaargh! I jusr received my AMEX Gold Business Card from the 75,000 offer yesterday and called the 800 number to confirm. The ever helpful CSR suggested I sign up for EXPO, and I did, but with no offer of any additional points. So word of warning to all – don’t sign up prematurely. I may call and see if they’ll let me have the points anyway.

  9. Is there a charge/fee to enroll in this program?

    Since its a charge card I gotta pay in full any way..so there shouldn’t be any interest sorta thing to worry about?

    basically, if i pay in full..will this get me additional 5k just for enrolling?

    • No fee to enroll. Don’t have to use it if you don’t want to. Just get the free points and keep paying in full. 😉

  10. Got rejected. They asked how much annual income..and not sure if the answer matters, but got the card yest, charged 10k today and applied today itself for EXPO and rejected.

    I will wait for letter in the mail to see exact reasoning

    • @Stacy, sorry to hear it didn’t work out for you. This one seems to have a high success rate, but looks like it certainly isn’t 100% for everyone.
