I know many of us might have first joined the AviancaTaca LifeMiles program fairly recently when they joined Star Alliance, or due to their recent promotion of selling miles with a 100% bonus.  Or perhaps you have never heard of them at all.  As View From the Wing points out, this can be a very lucrative Star Alliance program due to the following:

  • The award chart is pretty reasonable
  • One-way awards are available for half the cost of roundtrip
  • They offer cash and points awards bookings. As long as you have at least 40% of the miles needed for an award in your account, you can buy the difference in miles for US$12.75 per 1000 miles. That’s less than 1.3 cents per mile.
  • No fuel surcharges on awards
  • Online booking of Star Alliance partners

There is also a way to purchase points in a very inexpensive manner and then redeem them on other Star Alliance carriers.  Basically, this is a program worth becoming familiar with.  However, the point of today’s post is to point out a promotion that is currently available via their e-store.  Essentially, LifeMiles is awarding 250 bonus miles for each purchase in their e-store.  That may not sound like much at first, but start thinking about many small purchases, and it can add up.  Even though I am a member of LifeMiles, I have not received info on this promo directly.

However, on this thread in Flyertalk, the following details are provided:

“You have more than 700 online stores in the United States where you can earn miles per dollar spent, and during October, 2012, you will receive 250 bonus miles for each purchase.

Join LifeMiles e-Store and discover all the stores where you can earn miles! Remember that to earn LifeMiles you need to log-in with you username and password on our e-Store page and then choose a store. You’ll be redirected to the store webpage to make your purchase.

If you dont have an address in the United States, our Partner SkyBOX takes your purchases to your country.”

Here are some terms and conditions related to the promo (also provided on the FT thread):

Bonus miles apply for each purchase you make during October, 2012. Bonus miles apply for each purchase you make during October, 2012 in e-Store. Members must access the retailer websites through LifeMiles e-store and be logged in their LifeMiles account. Miles will be awarded in no more than 45 days after the purchase. LifeMiles Terms and Conditions apply. LifeMiles is a trademark of LifeMiles Corp. TACA includes Taca International Airlines, Taca Perú, Lacsa and Aviateca.

You will need to read the fine print on each retailer to make sure that your purchases are eligible for earning miles.  For example, iTunes only provides rewards on the first purchase.

However, there are other retailers that do have small purchases available without that restriction  I recommend doing some research of the available retailers/restrictions in the e-store and follow this Flyertalk thread.  I also recommend moving quickly and saving screen shots if you are interested in doing much with this promotion.  It wouldn’t surprise me if some folks go in pretty big on this promo.  Personally I would not do too much with this until I had my hands on a copy of the actual terms and conditions.

I’m at the Chicago Seminars all weekend, so won’t be online as much as usual, but I would love to hear your finds/experiences with this promotion!

  1. might have been helpful if you let people know there are also terms listed specifying a $50 minimum spend. no one knows if this will work but the chance of wasted money is quite high.

  2. @Mike S, I think I have read that some do.
@Wei Yu, I believe there is some confusion over whether that is the same terms for the same promo. I have not been able to spend much time online since this was posted, but I know there is some discussion on that at viewfromthewing.
@John, in the post I said I wouldn’t do anything until I got my hands on the terms and conditions, but I didn’t have them when this was written. Truthfully, I haven’t been online much since them so still don’t have them. I do know there has been some discussion about whether that $50 is for the same promo or not.
