Very Good Targeted SPG Offer

A reader was nice enough to forward me a targeted email that they received from Starwood Preferred Guest. I know sharing targeted promos can sometimes just lead to more frustration than anything else, but I thought this one was interesting enough to share. She is a new SPG member who recently got the SPG credit card. To entice her to become more active in the program, SPG sent her a “bonus beginnings” promo that will award her a free weekend night stay in a category 1-6 hotel after just one stay.

That is an absolutely fantastic promotion! Sure it has a few more strings attached than the old Hyatt Faster Free Nights that everyone misses, but the concept is the same. Have a cheap stay, and leverage it into a stay at a very nice property. I expected the promo to top out at a Category 4 or 5, but it goes all the way up to a 6. She also has over a year to use her free night – which is incredible.

Registration is limited to those who were targeted, so don’t get your hopes up if you didn’t get solicited by SPG. However, do keep an eye on your inbox, especially if you are a newer SPG member. I know my own mom is a new SPG member due to getting the co-branded Amex, so I will tell her to stalk her inbox as well. This is an offer to jump on.

Here are the terms and conditions:

Registered member will earn one (1) Free Weekend Night Award in a standard room at any Category 1–6 hotel after one (1) eligible stay. A maximum one (1) Free Weekend Night Award can be earned. Eligible stay must be at an SPG-participating property anytime from December 1, 2012, through February 28, 2013. Non-participating properties can be found at under program terms and conditions, section 1.2. Free Weekend Night Award must be used by February 28, 2014, and can be redeemed by calling your local SPG Customer Contact Center and mentioning Award ID D2FFWN. Free Weekend Night Award is not transferable and cannot be redeemed for cash. Unused Awards are forfeited.

Congrats to anyone who got this offer. Don’t let it go to waste!

  1. I got a variation of this offer last night. Earn 4000 pts for my “first three stays” by February 28. I live in Chicago area so I can frequently get stays for sub $60m so 12000 pts for $180ish. Not sure yet if I should do some mattress runs for this. Oh, and I have been a member since 2006!

  2. I’m a “newer” member and got the same 4,000 pts for up to 3 stays by 2/28.

Can you please tell me – is this a good deal?

  3. My husband got the offer in the original post. WE always travel together and normally stay on my account. Think we will switch to his in 2013 and take advantage of this promo.

  4. I think the 4K bonus/stay is good to steer existing travel plans…but not good enough for a mattress run or to make new plans.

My gf got this offer, and I’m not sure what to do with it, since she hardly travels.

  5. I received the free weekend night offer. I’m not a new customer but I forgot to include my SPG # on my latest Amex SPG application and combined my accounts into the new number.

  6. My wife is a new SPG member and I am an inactive SPG member (been a member for 6-7 years, but haven’t stayed in 2-3 years). My wife got the promo pictured above and I got one that was a poorly modified version which still had a lot of copy about being a new member. It’s probably worth trying to register even if you didn’t see the email.

In the T&C it also says: “A qualifying rate is any rate that is eligible to earn Starpoints in the Starwood Preferred Guest program.” Does that mean that you have to make sure to book directly through SPG as booking through portals may not give you points?

  7. I received a 2000 points per stay, up to 6000, wife received 4000 points per stay up to 12,000. We both got the SPG cards during the last 30k signup.

  8. My wife signed up for the Amex SPG card and as a new SPG member she received an offer of 4000 points/stay up to a total of 12000 points (3 stays) to be completed by Feb 28, 2013. Of course no dice for me since I have been a SPG member for a long time.

  9. I have the Amex SPG card for over a year and a few stays this year. I received the promo of 2,000 points per stay (up to 3 stays). Checked my wife’s email account…she deleted without reading that she could get a free stay after one stay. She is SPG for about a year with no SPG Amex and no stays. I’m thinking a mattress run will be in the works for her.

  10. aww, all I got was 2000 pts/night for up to 3 nights. But my hubby just got Gold Status so not sure if it’s worth it to switch next weekend’s reservation to my acct instead? It’s at the St Regis Monarch beach resort, not sure if we’d be able to get any of the benefits anyways (apparently you have to promptly check out at 12pm or pay 100/hr thereafter).

  11. Thank you so much for sharing this. The offer was sitting in my wife’s account and we never would have known. She got the spg amex this summer. I am spg gold and got nothing.

  12. Wait, I can’t find an email from SPG but I was able to register and received a confirmation email. Does that mean I actually registered or is that a glitch in the system?

  13. This offer is very very good. I clicked the link and entered my info but was told i’m not eligible. I have some business hotel stays next week that I wish I was eligible for this. Would’ve made it count.

  14. I got this offer as a new member (I had been a member for about 6 mos and no stays). We did a cheap stay in Richmond and used the free night in NYC, great deal!

  15. Interesting that I received the offer for a free weekend night, but my wife did not (nor did she get any 4k or 2k offer). Both of our SPG accounts were created around the same time, and we both got the Amex SPG card within days of each other. Maybe there’s something else that determines whether you get the offer or not 🙂

    • I’m a little jealous so many of you got great offers! ;). 4,000 bonus points per stay is also amazing. Now I have to do a thorough check of all family member’s accounts. Ha ha.

  16. I didn’t get the offer, and was told I am ineligible when I tried the above link. Have been a member for about five or six months, with no stays yet (no properties in the places I travel).

  17. Does anyone have registration links to share for the 2k, 4k, or other bonus starpoints offers? Can’t hurt to try registering to see which one(s) we were targeted for (if any)!

  18. What is considered a good rate for a Starwood property? I noticed there is a Four Points for $75 prepaid rate not too far from me.

  19. .
Thanks for mentioning this, MP. My wife and I both got this offer but I had not gotten a chance to look at it yet. I am one stay away from Gold (not sure if it is worth it) all of the stays were using miles (or from the cards), and my wife has only one-two stays, all on miles. We have been members since Summer 2011.
The title of the email is: Make your next move – and get a bonus from SPG.

  20. I’m not sure if it matters or not but I was offered the free night bonus. It said at the beginning “We’d love to see you again soon”. I’m guessing it’s because I recently stayed at an SPG property. My wife’s offer said “Here’s a great offer to get things going”. My guess is that the offer depends on whether or not you’ve stayed at one of their properties recently.

  21. MP – Thanks so much for sharing!! Love my husband, but do not love his lack of attention to reading important travel emails. He qualified for the one free night, which is awesome since we have a stay planned at the Category 6 Westin in Florence for our one year anniversary!

  22. Does this need to be three separate bookings to get the 12k points? This would not work with three consecutive nights at 1 property, correct? I’m very new to the SPG game as you can tell

  23. @Idin – I also want to know – will this work with Cash Points? Read the TC’s but couldn’t find anything. Have a room booked in a few weeks with C&P and would love to get our free night!

  24. My offer was for Gold Status after my next 2 stays. (I’m at 7 stays, so it basically gets me gold one stay earlier, and also gives me a longer period of time to get it since i have until end of February.)

    • Jack, I don’t know about cash and points. Those rates are not allowed with many of their promos, but you would need to check w SPG to be sure.

  25. I checked via mp’s link and was eligible for the 2000 bonus points per stay up to 6000 points. I just applied for and received spg amex this week. Have been spg member for approx 6 months.

  26. Wife and I both got the free night offer. Just booked separate nights at a local SPG hotel with a starpoints 20% off deal. 72$ all-in and we will be using the free night at a cat. 6 hotel in Hawaii. very excited!
