Thanks to a FT thread, Loyalty Lobby, and View From the Wing for starting speculation and then obtaining confirmation about the Spring Hyatt Hotel promo that will run from March 1 – May 31st.  Hyatt has now also confirmed the promo with me, and the “More Possibilities” promo will offer 3,000 bonus points for every third eligible night at any Hyatt worldwide, up to a max of 45,000 bonus points.  Those who have the Hyatt Credit Card will earn a 20% points bonus – up to 9,000 extra points if you max out the promo.  Registration will open on February 15th and the registration link will be available at that time.

So, the good news is that after months of nothing, we will again have a Hyatt promo within the next few weeks!  The bad news is, well, it isn’t life altering by any stretch.  In Fall 2011 the Hyatt promo awarded 5,000 points after every three nights, and last spring there was a progressive type promo where 4 nights got you 4K points, 8 nights got you 12K points, 12 nights got you 24K points, and 16 nights got you 44K points.  So, last year 16 nights got you 44,000 bonus points and this year 45 nights will get you 45,000 bonus points.  Eek.  Of course, I’m sure it is a supply and demand issue, so I am happy there is at least some promo available as every point helps.  Just putting the promo into historical context….

Marriott remains the quickest way for many to get some free nights if you were targeted for the common “stay twice get a free night certificate” version of the MegaBonus.  The Hyatt promo is most similar to the SPG promo which essentially awards 500 bonus points per night.  SPG points are worth more than Hyatt points to many, but they aren’t worth twice as much to most, so in that case the Hyatt promo does have the slight edge since it essentially gives twice as many points.  However, if you can hit exactly 20 nights then the edge shifts back to SPG with the 10K bonus.  Of course with both you need to stay in multiples that match up with the promo requirements.

So here is my opinion of the spring promos.  I’m glad they are there.  I will register for them.  They all help get toward the goal of some “free” travel faster than if they weren’t there, but none of them will really influence my staying behavior.  I will continue to stay with the chains that I prefer, and may try to end in a multiple that lines up with the way the promos pay out, but I won’t be doing mattress runs or staying at a different chain than normal because of any of these promos.

How will these promos influence your stay patterns this spring?  Or, will you just take the extra points you may pick up along the way, but not change your stay patterns at all?

  1. I have a 3 night stay every March for a conference. I’ll gladly take an extra 3.6K points. Last year I probably should have put in a mattress run to get a 4th night.

  2. I actually don’t do Mariott much, but I’m finding these Cat 4 certificates are really great for the times when I just need a place to crash on a weekend trip. I swiched from Hilton to Mariott for my next week stay & am bed hopping so I can earn 2 of them.

  3. I am new to the Hilton credit card. What is the difference between earning points and earning miles? Participants must elect and cannot change their election. Thank you!
