Club Carlson Summer Promo Announced

Club Carlson had my favorite summer hotel promo of the year last year (by far) with their stay one night, get one night promo.  That promo awarded up to 50,000 points with just one stay.  That was enough for a free standard room at any of their properties!  Naturally many have had their hopes up that a similar promo would return this summer.  The good news is that a Club Carlson summer promo has been announced, but the bad news is it is not “Buy One, Get One”.

This year when you register and stay two or more consecutive nights anytime between May 13 and July 21, 2013 at any of their 1,000+ participating Carlson Rezidor hotels worldwide (including Radisson Blu, Radisson, Park Plaza, Park Inn by Radisson, and Country Inns & Suites By Carlson,) you earn 10,000 bonus Points for each eligible stay.  That is in addition to the points normally earned for the stays.  Stays or nights paid for using Points + Cash are not eligible for this promotion. Members need to register once before July 21, 2013, but registration must be received before checkout of the first eligible stay to qualify.  In other words, go ahead and register now just in case.

This deal is nowhere near as exciting as last year’s summer promo, but it is still really easy to rack up Club Carlson points.  Let’s assume that you have a two night stay where the rate is $100 per night and that you have the co-branded Club Carlson Visa Signature.  Here is what you could earn with this promo:

2,000 (Online booking bonus for Gold members, which comes from having the co-branded card)

4,000 (20 points per dollar from Club Carlson x $200 spending)

2,000 (50% points bonus for having Gold status)

10,000 (from summer promo)

2,000 (10x for charging Club Carlson spending on the card)

That means that a $100 per night two night stay could easily bring in 20,000 points.  That is more than enough for two free nights in their Category 1 properties (or two two nights stays using the second night free benefit with the card), or one night in their Category 2 properties (or two consecutive nights if using the second night free benefit of the card), or gets you 40% of the way to a night in their top tier Category 6 properties that cost 50,000 points per night.  That is not terrible at all, but again, is nowhere near what we got from Club Carlson last year when they were really working to get their name out there.

As always, I have added this promo to my promos page which is a great resource for a quick overview of the current major hotel promos.  What do you think of this Club Carlson promotion compared to the other hotel promotions that are out there right now?

  1. JW, I think that promo was to get their name out there and get folks trying out their properties, so I’m not sure they still would need a big promo like that since it seems to have kind of worked. I would love to see it return, but I would not be overly optimistic.

  2. In the example, if we were staying on points instead and had the Club Carlson credit card, we’d be staying for free the second night. So card holders have to decide whether to stay somewhere and pay around 20k points for two nights (with 2nd night free), or pay $200 in cash for both nights to earn 20k in points.

Either way, it’s sad to not have anything nearly as exciting as last year!

  3. I have to say that last year’s was an effective promo. I earned a lot of stays last summer, but now I look for Radisson properties for paid stays much more often.

  4. Keith, for sure. I was assuming in this example you were just looking to do a paid stay, but I do love the second night free award benefit!
Jetsfan, I agree it was very effective and lined up well with when they introduced their credit card. They had a smart cookie running the show from my point of view. 😉

  5. Actually the 20,000 points would be good for two nights TWICE at their Category One properties, and for two consecutive nights at the Category Two properties, based on the premise that one has the co-branded card, which is part of your analysis. The “last night free” on multiple night award stays is what makes this program so good in my opinion.

    • DaveS, absolutely right. Since I am including the card in the analysis, it does make sense to include it in the redemption – assuming you were doing two night stays. Will get that updated!

  6. The Terms said points+Cash is not eligible. Is there any chance using points only for the two night stays is eligible?

    • Brian, the terms on this one are not overly detailed to say the least. However, I would assume they were just spelling that one out as not applicable since they thought it would be in question. I would assume that pure points stays definitely will not count, but that is my assumption based on how most promos work. It doesn’t seem to be clearly stated in the terms.

  7. @mommypoints–I’m on the fence about this promo… I’m looking at $175-$180 after taxes and fees for a 2 night stay at a place that I was thinking about going to but wasn’t committed. Do you think that is worth 20K Club Carlson points is worth it (I have the Credit Card)? Doing the math, I’m assuming your advice would be its not worth going just for the promo, right?

    • G, I don’t think this is the type of promo where you make a stay simply because of the promo. However, it could serve as a tipping point if you were on the fence about the trip. Just keep in mind that 10,000 points is only the equivalent of $2,000 in everyday spending on the card…which most of us can very easily do. So, no I would not plan a trip because of this, but perhaps it could be the very final straw to tip you into doing something you wanted to do anyway.

  8. Hi ,
Does the mattress run work in all properties worldwide ? I am esp. asking in reference to properties in India. If i book the cheapest hotel in any city for 2 nights and dont turn up then will i get all the points – 20 points for a dollar, 10 points for a dollar as gold elite, 2000 points online booking, 10000 points under promo ?

    • You typically have to check-in in person even for MR. I also am not sure this promo is worth a mattress run unless you really do have some interest in staying since the payoff isn’t that amazing.

  9. I have CC reward card which gives me gold status already then how many more stays do I need to move up to the Concierge status? And can I also use my AAA discount rate with this promotion?
