What is a MegaDo?

One of the questions I get from time to time is, “What is a MegaDo?”.  It is a very strange word that gets thrown around in the miles and points world from time to time, and I agree the definition isn’t intuitive.  Essentially it is a big (mega) organized trip (do) that allows you to do and see travel related things you normally wouldn’t have access to.  These trips often involved a chartered flight, hotel and airline sponsors, swag, food, drinks, and friends.  I have been on four MegaDos including Star MegaDo 3, Star MegaDo 4, the first OneWorld MegaDo, and most recently Star MegaDo 5 (head to the official MegaDo blog for a very detailed report and great videos with the highlights of Star MegaDo 5).  The Star or OneWorld designations refer to the airline alliance that is involved with the trip.

These trips are hardcore fun, and not for the faint of heart.  The schedules can be pretty brutal, the price is sometimes steep, and the pace is pretty hectic.  All of the trips have been different, and of course I have had personal preference toward some of the trips more than others, but they all involve some pretty cool things and some pretty great fun.  Obviously I’ve quite enjoyed them if I have already been on four!

Instead trying to explain what a MegaDo is with more written words, here is a video with my explanations and some shots from the MegaDos I have been on!

Also, on these trips you usually score some swag from the sponsors.  This time I have some swag to share with you guys!  The swag includes:

  • $20 in Starbucks gift card courtesy of me as you really need some caffeine to survive the real MegaDo experience

If you want all these pieces of Star MegaDo 5, then just leave a comment on this post by tomorrow (Sunday November 10th) at 11:59PM letting me know you are interested and I’ll pick a winner at random!  Good luck and I hope to see you on a future MegaDo!

    • srinivasu, this one was $999 for economy. That included pretty much all meals, ground transportation, miles, the charter flight, etc. It did not include hotels.

  1. Do you know what/when the next MegaDo will be? How far in advance are dates/schedules released? Is there a website to follow MegaDos?

  2. On a different subject, I have a question. Can you tell me what are the minimum points required on Chase Sapphire Preferred to transfer to SW or UA. Thanks!

  3. Would love some swag! i was able to attend SMD1 in Frankfurt a few years ago but have not been able to go on another yet.

  4. Sorry if I wasn’t clear – you win all or none, so no need to list the specific item you want. 😉

Sharon, it is in 1,000 point increments.

Jim, MegaDo.com is a great website to follow. They also often get the info on MilePoint.com even before the MegaDo website. There are plenty of MegaDo rumors out there, but I don’t know which ones will actually materialize. I’m guessing there will be 1-2 MegaDos next year. One will likely be Star MegaDo 6 and the other could be anything. OneWorld 2 has been in the works for a while, but likely held until the merger is done.

  5. This sounds like a lot of fun. Is it a one day trip or multi-day?

I may just need to add this to my bucket list ;p
I would love your Air Canada model airplane 🙂

  6. Thanks for the info. Have considered the * MegaDo but never actually booked. Might need to give it a go. Plus the swag would be great!

  7. I would love to give these a new home, and I hope to at least take one MegaDo trip during my lifetime. Thanks for the post!

  8. I will be happy to go for Star Mega DO 5 if I can. Love your posts MP. I have a 4 years old daughter and your posts inspired me and encourage me to travel with her without any hassle. Thank you again.

  9. I would love the Canada gloves. I love Root’s winter wear. I can’t wait until it stays below freezing and freezes out my allergens.

  10. Thank you for sharing your MegaDo experiences with us! It was on my wish list for this year. I am totally doing it next year.

  11. I would love to win this! I’m wondering whether people who go on Mega Dos have to be invited by the airlines or hotels, or can anyone go? Does one have to have elite status? How can I find about the next one? Thanks!

  12. I thought this was finally the time I’d be able to do the MegaDo, but unfortunately I just couldn’t swing it financially. Winning your swag would be the next best thing! Thanks for running the contest, and please pick me!!

  13. I could really use those gloves especially if I were to go as Robin Scherbatsky for Halloween next year. Noise cancelling ear bugs would be nice for my next trip along with the other goodies.
