Happy Sunday from Las Vegas…the location I flew to last time using Spirit miles.  Given that even I use Spirit miles from time to time (though I know many folks avoid them like the plague), I wanted to share that Spirit Airlines will be giving away 20,000 Spirit miles to 5,000 people in order to celebrate their new routes from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) to several new destinations including Houston George Bush Intercontinental (IAH), Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW).

I’ve written about (and participated) in these sort of Spirit giveaways before, and while they aren’t for everyone, they can be a way to get an (almost) free ticket very easily if you follow all their rules and use the miles before they expire.

  1. Thanks for sharing this Summer!! We are from MSP and would have tried to do this, but of course this week we are gone, traveling… oh well, next time. 🙂

  2. Hmmm. I’m kinda tempted to do this. While I wouldn’t be able to use the cert within 90 days my mom would love a trip to Vegas (she’s on her way right now) and wouldn’t care that the flight was on Spirit since it’s free.

  3. Al, that was done when they were in Houston.
Lee, you won’t get the miles for I think 45 days, so the clock starts then. However, I wasn’t able to use mine in time either and used them for friends to go to Vegas. They loved it!

  4. Thanks for posting this!
I just got my voucher at Union Depot. You were right about it being pretty easy to get. I got there right at 11 and there were maybe 30-40 people in line ahead of me. 5 min later I had the voucher and was out the door.

  5. I just got back from the one in St. Paul. It was not busy, but I suspect the other ones will be based on their locations. On the certificate, it does say that only one 20,000 mile certificate can be credited to a FREE SPIRIT account.

  6. When you got your Spirit voucher a couple years ago, you mentioned that they only handed them to adults so you had to go back a second time to get one for your little one. Did they explicitly tell you that you had to be 18?

I’m asking because a friend asked if she could bring her 4yo and get a voucher for him & I don’t know what to tell her. I don’t remember the guy with the bullhorn at Union Depot saying adults only, but I might have missed the announcement. There was a little kid a few people in front of me in line, too, but I didn’t notice whether he got a voucher or not….

    • Dan, yes they did say you had to be 18 and didn’t give them to kiddos. Of course, perhaps the rules changed since then. I don’t know off hand. I would say at least give her the head’s up that in the past kids didn’t get them so she isn’t too disappointed if it doesn’t work out.

  7. Went to the rosedale mall fiasco today. And realized that they were handing out tickets to kids under 18! For those who went did anyone witness that too?! Confronted one of the people working the booth and he said that the rules were different there then the website!! 🙁
