I don’t post very frequently about Hilton HHonors, in part because of the award chart changes they made last year that were pretty brutal in some cases, in part just because there are multiple other programs that my family just personally uses more.  However, the reality is that many mid-range and family friendly Hilton properties weren’t impacted by the big award chart changes, and some even got less expensive on points.  Bottom line is Hilton HHonors points aren’t always useful for the same things they were a year ago (like luxury redemptions), but they are still a good tool to consider when looking for family vacations on points.  Along those lines, I wanted to mention that one (of the many) Hilton co-branded credit cards has an improved limited time offer that is listed to run through April 18, 2014.

(Offer Expired)  Citi® Hilton HHonorsTM Visa Signature® Card – LIMITED TIME OFFER:  50,000 points after spending $1,000 in the first four months + $50 statement credit after you spend $50 or more on your first hotel stay within the Hilton HHonors Portfolio during the first six months of cardmembership

It is an annual fee free card, so it may appeal to those who don’t want to worry about paying or keeping track of annual fees for the long run.  It also provides HHonors Silver status and a fast track to HHonors Gold status if you have four stays in the first 90 days of card membership.  However, I think it is the sign-up bonus points and statement credit that would be most interesting to the majority of folks.

As I mentioned, there are many other Hilton cards issued by both Citi and American Express for you to choose from, with the Citi® Hilton HHonors Reserve Card typically coming out on top by my calculations as it awards two weekend night certificates after $2,500 in eligible purchases within 4 months of account opening, and awards Gold status for the life of card membership.  However, if you are looking for points you can use any day of the week, then that sign-up bonus of two weekend nights won’t be of much help.  The highest Hilton sign-up bonus currently in terms of points is via the Hilton HHonors Surpass Card from American Express, though that card does come with an annual fee that is not waived the first year.

  1. I applied for this car about a month ago, I got the 50k points but no $50. Do you think I can call Citi and see if they can add the $50 statement credit?

  2. I’ve been thinking that it would be an interesting post or series of posts to look at the hotel brands that include breakfast and/or internet and/or other amenities for non-elites. For instance, I know that within the Hilton world, Hampton Inns provide free breakfast and internet. However, I stay at hotels infrequently, and it would be nice to be able to know that X brand of Starwood, Y brand of Hyatt, Z brand of Carlson include these amenities. It remains a mystery to me that the more expensive, higher-end brands do not provide internet with their rooms.

  3. Been thinking about jumping on this one to pad the hilton hhonors balance while I have gold status with the reserve card. We enjoy hampton inn for the free breakfast, so the points still provide value to us.

  4. Seems like you have to work hard to make hilton honors seem like a good program. On top of that, this isn’t the best offer out there. I guess it pays a good kickback.

    • HHonors isn’t my #1 hotel program to be sure, but there are lots of families that have great success with it so it isn’t to be totally ignored. This is also the best offer for this card to my knowledge, but if you have a link to a better offer please share!

  5. Thank you for the link to the offer. I was just approved. My family is traveling to Hawaii this summer and will be staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. I got the Reserve card a few months ago for the 2 free weekend nights. With those, enough points for a third night, and now the points I will get from this card, we will get all but one of our nights free.

One question…if I book 4 award nights, with 2 of them being from the weekend award certs, will I get the 5th night free or do the award certs not count toward the 5th night free because they are not “points”?

We stay at Hampton Inns often when we pay for hotels because they are often a great value for my family. Though Hilton is not at the top of list in hotel programs, it does have a small place in my portfolio of points.

  6. Totally agree with those that say that there are still some good uses for HHonors points. JennyC, I’m not sure. I’m inclined to think you would not get the 5th night free in that case, but you could always ask and see.
