The first late spring/summer hotel promotion was announced today from the Starwood Preferred Guest program!  This is a popular travel time for many families, so it is great when you can earn some extra hotel points on your travels thanks to various promotions.  The bad news is that since summer is already a pretty popular travel time, the promotions available then aren’t always the best.  Of course, some extra points are better than none, so here is what SPG has to offer.

With the SPG® Earn Away global promotion, you’ll earn double Starpoints on all eligible stays at more than 1,000 participating hotels and resorts through July 31, 2014. Or stretch any stay to include a Sunday (Saturday at hotels in the Middle East) and earn triple Starpoints. It doesn’t get better than that. Register by June 30, 2014.

SPG Summer PromoThere is a medium sized list of hotels that are not participating in this promo that can be found here.

You can go ahead and register for this promotion now, which I recommend so you don’t forget later.  This promo is not great (especially if your stay doesn’t include a Sunday), but may work better for some than the current promo that runs through April 30th and awards 2,500 bonus Starpoints for every five eligible nights you stay (up to 10,000 bonus Starpoints and 20 eligible nights). That promo also awards an additional 5,000 bonus Starpoints when you hit 25 eligible nights.

Here are some of the terms and conditions for the promo (full terms found here):

Registered members will earn triple Starpoints if eligible stays include a Sunday night at participating hotels and resorts, other than those in the Middle East. Participating hotels and resorts in the Middle East will instead award triple Starpoints for eligible stays that include a Saturday night. Registered members will earn double Starpoints on all other eligible stays at participating hotels and resorts during the promotion period. Participating properties in the following Middle Eastern countries will award triple Starpoints for stays that include a Saturday: Amman: Jordan; Bahrain: Bahrain; Kuwait: Kuwait City; Lebanon: Beirut; Saudi Arabia: Al Khobar, Dammam, Jeddah, Makkah, Medina, Riyadh; Qatar: Doha; United Arab Emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai and Fujairah. To view the complete list of hotels and resorts not participating in the promotion, visit Members who earn double Starpoints will earn an additional two (2) Starpoints per eligible US$1 spent (for a total of 4 Starpoints per dollar). Members will earn an additional four (4) Starpoints per eligible US$1 spend (a total of 6 Starpoints per dollar) with eligible triple Starpoint stays. Elite-level extra Starpoint earnings and other bonuses will not be doubled or tripled. Only the base two-Starpoints-per-dollar earnings are doubled or tripled. There is no limit to the number of bonus Starpoints that can be earned during the promotion period. Offer is eligible with other Starpoint promotions, however each offer bonuses independently of each other and are not combinable.

  1. Thanks, tolerable for now. Since I focused a lot of stays in Q1 on Hyatt for their better promo I’ll be stretching for 50 at SPG in Q2, and with this heads up I know which hotel to stay at (hint: its the one that’s participating). Thanks for the heads up!

  2. Glenn, glad you have a good participating option and smart move focusing on Hyatt Q1. My husband did the same. 😉

  3. Thanks for the heads up on this promo. I’ll be signing up and taking advantage of it.

Why do you characterize a promo that gives you two to three times the base points as you would normally get as “not great”

    • Tom, it’s “not great” relative to other promos we have seen in the past that were much more lucrative. It is 2 or 3 times better than nothing, but historically speaking it isn’t something to get overly excited about or change your travel plans for. It is, however, something to be sure and register for and use if you happen to have SPG stays!
