Starwood Preferred Guest points are one of the very hardest type of points to earn, and it should be no surprise that they are (not) coincidentally pretty much universally regarded as one of the most valuable points.  There is no SPG online mileage mall, virtually no bonus categories on the co-branded credit card, and no realistic transfer partners to move points into the program at a favorable ratio.

bonus spg points sheratonSince earning SPG points is tough, I thought it was worth highlighting a promo that allows you to earn up to 3,000 bonus SPG points for stays at a Sheraton when you book a room with Sheraton Club access and pay for the stay with an Amex credit card (hopefully the SPG Amex at least for domestic stays where there isn’t a foreign transaction fee).

To earn bonus points you need to register for this promo, book a Sheraton Club stay by November 30, 2014 using codes Use code DAILYFS or SICLUB, and pay with any American Express Card.

  • Stay one night and earn 500 Starpoints.
  • Stay two consecutive nights and earn 1,000 Starpoints.
  • Stay three or more consecutive nights, and earn 3,000 Starpoints.

On the surface this deal sounds pretty solid assuming you were going to book a Sheraton room with club access anyway.  Paying extra for a room with club access will obviously not be the cheapest nightly rate at the hotel, and the bad news is the codes specific to this promo seem to drive the price per night even higher than the lowest price with club access.

Club access can be very handy when traveling with a family, but I would not pay too much extra per night for access at many Sheraton properties since the club offerings are usually pretty basic, at least within the United States.   The offerings are often a notch better at properties outside the United States.  Also keep in mind that those with SPG Platinum status will get complimentary club access, and I have even received complimentary access with Gold status in some situations.

In other words, don’t overpay, but consider this promo if you were in the market for Sheraton Club access on an upcoming stay!

  1. I dislike “promotions” where they actually charge a higher rate at the same time. Club Carlson triple points was often doing the same thing. The higher rate often wasn’t worth the extra points (unless somebody else was paying and you treat their money different than you would yours own).

That would make an interesting topic. Do you spend more of your employer’s money than you would otherwise just to get yourself extra points, miles, or the like?

    • Carl, I’m with you on not loving this kind of promotion, and you are 100% right that folks staying on “other people’s money” are likely the ones that take the most advantage. Now whether or not they should is another issue completely.
