Wright Amendment Gone, Fly On From Dallas Love

Today is a big deal if you fly out of Dallas Love Field, or really if you just fly Southwest in general.  The Wright Amendment has (finally) expired and airlines can now operate domestic flights on larger aircraft out of Dallas Love beyond the confines of a few nearby states.  This is clearly huge for Southwest who is hosting a big event today and has been giving away points leading up to today’s event.  It is also an important event for those who live in the area and want to get the biggest bang for their Southwest points (and Companion Pass).

Wright Amendment Ends

The first non-restricted Southwest flight to leave Love this morning headed to Denver, which previously was not permitted as a nonstop destination for Southwest out of Love.  If you live in the area and ignored Southwest because connections made it an inconvenient airline for your family, it is time to think again.

In addition to the cities they were already serving, Southwest will operate daily nonstop flights out of Dallas Love to Washington DC, Los Angeles, Chicago, Orlando, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Denver, New York, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, San Diego, Orange County, Phoenix, Nashville, San Francisco, and Oakland.

There are lots of family friendly destinations in that list for skiing, Mickey Mouse-ing, heading to the beach, and more.  Sadly, you will not see any of Southwest’s new international destinations on that list as part of the agreement that was reached to phase out the Wright Amendment in 2006.

By following the hashtag #nonstoplove on Twitter, it seems that Southwest is out and about in Dallas handing out free Southwest tickets today to celebrate.  I see they are at the Dallas Zoo now, and I don’t know if there may be other destinations on the agenda today or not.

Virgin America at Love Field Starting Today:

Also worth noting for Dallas travelers, is the introduction of Virgin America flights out of Love Field beginning today.  Virgin America has left DFW in favor of Love Field, and in addition to the flights they operated from Dallas to San Francisco and Los Anegles, they will add Washington DC and shortly thereafter New York City all from Love.

To celebrate, Virgin America is offering a 20% off code valid through tomorrow using the code LOVE.  The discount is valid for flights from October 20 – December 17th.  With the 20% off code, I’m seeing some pretty good prices starting at around $200 RT from Dallas – San Francisco and more.  The promo code does not seem to drop the points price of flights, just the cash price.

Transfer Points to Southwest or Virgin:

If you want to transfer in points to either of these programs, remember that Southwest is a 1:1 transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards and Virgin America is a 2:1 transfer partner from American Express Membership Rewards.

I’m excited to see more flight options out of the Dallas region, and hope this increased competition will help keep prices lower for those looking to travel!
