Hyatt is leading the pack with their 2015 hotel category change announcements.  Effective January 22, 2015, 48 hotels will be moving to a lower category and 22 hotels moving to a higher category.

Between now and January 22, 2015, all award bookings can be made using the current award chart prices. Existing reservations for stays subsequent to January 21, 2015, will receive a refund for the point difference if the hotel moved to a lower category, but will not be charged additional even if the hotel jumps in category as long as the reservation is in place by January 21st.  Most importantly (to me), the FAQ lists the category award prices as the same for 2015 as they are for 2014.  That is more important to me than whether a few hotels move up or down in category.

That said, of course there will be some hotels that are moving up in category that we will wish didn’t, but overall these changes seem pretty mild to me.  Of those moving up in category, Park Hyatt Maldives and Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht jump out at me (and remind me I am well overdue with reviews of both properties).

More to come tomorrow, but for now here is the list.

  1. The thought of Excalibur as a category 3 is hilarious. When I saw it listed I was certain that it was to downgrade it to a 1.

  2. Looks like the hawaii properties have not changed this year. Good news because I haven’t planned my trip yet and have enough for 4 nights at the Grand Hyatt.

  3. While some consumers with points will win with a downgraded hotel, will rooms be available at lower rates. What criteria goes into rating a hotel?

  4. Glad to see the Hyatt on Main in Green Bay go down a level. That’s our main place to stay when visiting family. I just hope it stays open and a Hyatt. That hotel has been owned by 4 different brands in my memory.

  5. Hi Mommy Points! According to the above, we will get a refund in points if a hotel we booked moves down in category. I have a points & cash booking for a hotel that is moving down from category 3 to 2. So I know I will get a refund in the points, but will I get a cash refund of $20 as well? My booking is for mid Feb. so I am afraid to wait until Jan 22. to make a new points & cash booking since there might not be anymore PC left. Thanks!
