How to Use IHG “Into the Nights” Free Night Awards

The IHG “Into the Nights” promotion officially wrapped up on December 31st, and now my dashboard has updated to allow me to select points or two free nights as my prize for completing the requirements of the promotion.   Admittedly I won’t win the award for completing the requirements in the most concise fashion, but it got done in the end for less than $200 in additional out-of-pocket expenses.

Per the terms and conditions you only have until January 31st to claim your “two free nights” prize or else you will automatically be awarded the applicable reward bonus points for your offer.  In my case, it was a pretty easy decision between 31,600 IHG points or two free nights to use at any IHG property.  I can potentially get up to 100,000 points in value out of two free nights, and while I may not get that max benefit, I will certainly do better than an average of 15,000 points per night.

IHG Into the Nights Free Nights

To use the IHG Into the Nights free nights, you have to do a little detective work (or simply be reading this post).

  • Log-in to your IHG Rewards account.
  • Click on “My Account”
  • On the left-hand side of the screen click on “free night status”
  • Search for eligible award nights at the property of your choice using the “Book Free Night” option

IHG Free Night Status

In my searches, there was some very decent uses of the free nights available, though reports are the availability does not line up 100% with points availability.  Some of the options I had fun looking at were $400+ nights at the Holiday Inn Vail around Christmas, nights at the Intercontinental Paris that were selling for over 400 per night, or nights at the Intercontinental London Park Lane for around £400 per night (which is the equivalent of over $1200 USD for a two-night stay!).  IHG actually has some of the better availability in Europe for families with more than 2 people traveling, so there are some good uses even for overseas family travel.  I’m not 100% sure yet where we will use our free nights, but I have a few fun ideas that should ensure a great stay and a very good return on the money invested in the promo to earn the nights.

If there is availability using the IHG Into the Nights free nights awards then it will show as “Free” Average Nightly Rate when you search through the free nights status option as described above.

IHG Into the Nights Free Nights

Do keep in mind that the free nights are not transferable, reservations must be made 24 hours in advance, and they must be redeemed by December 31, 2015.  Of course, you also need to be sure to select free nights as your preference by January 31st or the system (per the terms) will default your selection into the points.

Have your free nights posted from the Into the Nights promo, and how do you plan to use them?

  1. What’s your understanding of redeemed by 12/31/15? Can you book something on 12/30/15 for something August 2016? Or does your stay need to be end by 12/31/15?

  2. Does anyone know if you have a rewards night booked already, can you change it to using one of these? I have two nights in Bora Bora booked and would love to basically swap for 100,000 pts to maximize value.

    • Sean, well the easy answer is if there is still award availability (and you are outside your cancel period) to just book with your free nights and cancel the points nights. You could also call to see if they could help do a swap over the phone.

  3. I just booked mine for 2 nights at the newly converted Intercontinental Dublin, formerly Four Seasons. I wonder what happens if you cancel, would they still go back as free nights?

  4. MP-I think that’s because the booking window isn’t open yet for past that date for IHG. I guess I can check on Saturday and see if it lets me book into 2016 to test. I was looking to use in NYC for NYE next year.

    • Ha ha – well that coincidence would explain it. I just assumed they were into January by now. I agree the best bet is simply to check again in a few days. I read it needs to be actually used by then, but you never know. 😉

  5. Not sure I am understanding some of the details. I “opted” for the two free nights as opposed to the points.

Do I need to BOOK those two free nights from the promo by January 31 ??? Or just use by book and use by December 31 ?

I called IHG and they indicated I only had to book/use by December 31; but plan to call again as I don’t have confidence in that answer. I’m not really ready to book now.

What is your take on this ?

  6. I CHOSE the two free nites (as opposed to the points).

Is that what is meant by “claimed” ??? If so, I am fine. Certainly not ready to make reservations yet.

  7. I needed a decent place for next week in Queenstown, New Zealand and the Crown Plaza became finally available today – Yay!- @ $514/night 🙂

  8. I have a question. I’m trying to use my 2 free nights at IC Le Grand Paris for my husband and I together with my petite 4-year-old (3people). We usually just have her sleep with us in a king-sized bed when we travel. I tried reserving with my free nights online but I couldn’t find a free room for 3 people. Is that common? Can I just go ahead and put 2 people?

    • I have read somewhere the deadline to do online passed. Haven’t verified that but I’d call IHG.

  9. I cant find the link to get access to me free available nights. i used to see a link on the left hand side of my screen but is not there any more.
anyone know how to see and book now?

  10. IHG has just told me that if I don’t use my two free nights then they expire and won’t convert to the points. Is this true?
