Earn SPG Points on Uber Rides!

Two programs that I quite like, Starwood Preferred Guest and Uber, have teamed up to make it possible to earn valuable SPG points on Uber rides!  If you haven’t yet used Uber, I truly think it is a game-changer for family travel in some cities – see examples why here and here.

How this will work is you have to link your Uber and Starwood accounts.  Then, once you have an eligible Starwood Preferred Guest stay posted to your account in a calendar year, you can earn SPG points on Uber rides at the following rates for the rest of that calendar year.  Note that this is valid for rides via UberX, UberBLACK, UberSUV, UberEXEC, UberLUX, UberPOP, UberPOOL and UberFAMILY.

SPG Uber

  • Earn one SPG point per dollar spent on Uber rides up to $10,000 spent per year.
  • Preferred SPG members earn 2 SPG points per dollar spent on Uber rides taken during an SPG hotel stay.
  • Gold/Platinum SPG members earn 3 SPG points per dollar spent on Uber rides taken during an SPG hotel stay.
  • Platinums with 75 nights earn 4 SPG points per dollar spent on Uber rides taken during an SPG hotel stay.

What I do not see answered in the FAQs is whether the annual 2 stays from the Starwood Preferred Guest Amex will count for the SPG stay requirement for the calendar year.  I’m about to hop on a plane now, but will try to get clarification on that ASAP.

Most of us probably only spend a handful on Uber each year, but I’m still more than happy to pick up some extra SPG points for those dollars spent (in addition to the points from whatever credit card you use to pay for the Uber ride).  For those that are big Uber users, this could be a decent haul of SPG points each year!

Thanks to @real_jetsetr for emailing me about this new partnership!

  1. Per the SPG Twitter team: ‏@spgassist @real_jetsetr Hi, in order to receive points for Uber rides you will need to have 1 eligible stay in one of our hotels. [In other words, an SPG Amex stay in and of itself is NOT sufficient to satisfy the stay requirement for this promo tie-in with Uber.]

  2. Just tried to link my accounts and SPG did not allow because my emails on the SPG and Uber accounts don’t match. What a dumb process!!! I use my business email address on my Uber account since all my Uber rides are for business and it is easier to expense by having the receipts emailed to my business account.

Also, I have been very frustrated with Uber lately. Since they reduced their prices, I cannot book UberX anymore. It is simply not available in my area. It used to be dozens of cars in the map at anytime but now the only option is to get a UberBLACK. Just to show how bad this is I used to pay $23-$26 on a ride from my home to the airport using UberX and now it costs me around $66 for the same ride on UberBLACK.

    • Uber has many flaws and is not a consistent product from area to area. In some cities, it may be fine. In others, it may turn out to be a train wreck (no pun intended).

I also feel that the people at the top lack vision and a conceptual plan of how to expand the business (it seems).

      Just my opinion.

  3. I have tried repeatedly – in different browsers – to make this work. It keeps telling me “Oops” even though my email and last name match on both accounts.
