Using the $100 Mercedes Benz Platinum Amex Certificate

I like to maximize as many perks that our rewards credit cards offer as possible, so I focus not just on the sign-up bonuses, but also the perks the cards give throughout the year.  One rewards card that I know is pretty popular in rewards circles even though it may sound like a strange fit at first is the Platinum Mercedes-Benz Amex.

For those curious, this is not an affiliate link or info provided by American Express – just a card we have and like.

The card gives the same normal Amex Platinum perks as the non-Mercedes Platinum Amex card such as access to Centurion Lounges, access to the Fine Hotel and Resorts Collection, the $200 annual airline fee credit, and more.  However, it also gives several Mercedes Benz specific perks such as a certain number of excess miles waived on a Mercedes lease, 5x on Mercedes charges, and one unique perk can be useful even if you have no interest in ever driving a Mercedes.

Using the $100 Certificate Toward Genuine Mercedes-Benz Accessories

The card comes with a $100 certificate at renewal of the account good toward “Genuine Mercedes-Benz Accessories”.  This is something that I would guess countless people have just tossed or let expire, but we decided to put ours to use and I’m happy to share some of what we got and what was available.

The Mercedes dealer we visited had a pretty wide selection of Mercedes branded items that while I would never spend real money on, I was happy to grab a few things with my $100 certificate.  They had items like coffee mugs, travel coffee containers, water glasses/bottles, leather bound notebooks, key rings, pens, wallets, polo shirts, golf shirts, t-shirts, an insulated picnic bag, and even a golf bag.

While I don’t have the pricing on each item, I can tell you that for our $100 gift certificate we got a nice insulated picnic sized bag, a leather bound journal (for Little C to write more stories!), and several water mugs and coffee travel mugs.  From memory t-shirts were probably $20+, polo/golf shirts $40+, the journals $15+, and the coffee and water mugs started around $12 – $15+ each.  We walked out of there with a decent assortment of things we have actually used for our $100 certificate.

Again, this isn’t stuff we would have normally waltzed into a car dealer and bought, but since we had the certificate anyway, we thought we would maximize it just like we try to do with any perk we come across.  There was no trouble or hassle at all using the certificate.

Now, the risk of this endeavor is that my husband and daughter wanted to just throw a convertible into the mix of things we were leaving with, but that didn’t quite work out for them.  Sorry guys, maybe next time we are in Hawaii we can rent another convertible…

Mercedes Benz Amex

If you have the Amex Mercedes Platinum card, remember to put the $100 accessories certificate you get to use.  Even if you don’t want any Mercedes branded items, perhaps you know someone who would like them.

  1. Thanks for your post! I completely forgot about the perk of this card! I cancelled the card in September last year, since my annual fee was due but still have a certificate that expires this October. Did the dealership verify or swipe you Mercedes AmEx platinum? Just wondering if I could still use the gift certificate, or if I should toss it.
