Can You Change Club Carlson Award Dates and Keep Last Award Night Free?

The much loved “last award night free” benefit of the Club Carlson credit card sadly ended on June 1st.  I know lots of us made as many future bookings as we could before the deadline in order to maximize our Club Carlson points.  However, it is inevitable that not all of those bookings will work out, and some of us will want to try and change or cancel some of those reservations in the coming weeks, months, and even years.

In the event that you need cancel a reservation you simply would do that as normal and get the points you spent redeposited back into your account without issue (assuming you are outside the window for any cancellation penalties).

However, what if you don’t want to cancel the reservation and instead would prefer to simply move your dates (and of course keep the last night free perk)?

Well, the bad news is that just like we all assumed would happen, officially you cannot modify existing reservations that have the last award night free perk and retain that last night free.  Via a statement on the website that popped up when I was viewing some of my reservations it says:

Bonus Award Night stays may not be booked after June 1, 2015. If existing Bonus Award Night reservations are changed or cancelled, the Bonus Award Night benefit will be voided and not available for reuse.

I tried modifying an existing reservation anyway just as a test, and as expected, received a message that I could not because I didn’t have enough points.  This would imply that it wanted to now charge me for the last award night but couldn’t since I basically drained my Club Carlson account before the June 1st changes kicked in.

Club Carlson Change Last Award night Free Reservation

I have read a very small number of reports of success of retaining the pre-June 1st award reservation and adjusting the dates without being charged the points for the last award night when contacting the hotel directly, but I think those successes will be the exception rather than the rule.  In other words, working with the hotel directly may be your best shot, but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t end up working out.

Have you had any luck adjusting a Club Carlson award reservation and retaining the last award night free perk?

    • This is exactly what I expected, but it is still good to find out for sure how things are working in practice as well as a potential work around that may work for a few lucky folks.

  1. Summer:

I booked some advance 2 night reservations using my Club Carlson points well into 2016 before June 1 to advantage of the free last night. Do you know if I cancel my Club Carlson Visa card prior to the date of reservation would I still retain the free award night for an existing reservation? Thanks.

  2. Indeed, our resort will have a transition on July 15th with the Hilton brand taking over, however,
all our confirmed Radisson reservations, will be honored as is.

Received this reply from my inquiry this morning. I have 8 nights booked over President’s holiday, February 2016. Now the big issue is air. My SW companion pass expires @ the end of December, 2015. Will get new SW companion pass in January, 2016 thru Marriott flight & hotel package. SW wants crazy points if I book now. AA wants 75K r/t. Will work it out somehow.
