Yesterday at the D23 Expo 2015 it was announced that Star Wars Lands are coming to both Disney World Hollywood Studios in Orlando and Disneyland in California!  The Disney Parks and Star Wars have a long relationship including the original Star Tours ride that opened in 1987.  This announcement of the expansion of their relationship is big time news in my household.

In case you didn’t know (and how could you since I try and hide my nerdery), I am a BIG Star Wars nut.  I grew up playing with all the toys and movies in the 80’s, lined up to see the midnight screening of Episode I in 1999, and am counting down the days until I go with all my old Star Wars friends and Little C to see Episode 7 in December.

The new lands will reportedly be the largest themed lands yet at 14 acres and according to the Disney Parks Blog, they will “transport guests to a never-before-seen planet, a remote trading port and one of the last stops before wild space where Star Wars characters and their stories come to life.”

There was no timeframe announced on how long construction will take, but as a point of reference, Cars Land at Disneyland is 12 acres and took 5-6 years from announcement to completion.  However, there are some other new Star Wars enhancements that will be ready much faster than the entire new land.

Disney Star WarsIn 2016, Disney will have a Star Wars: Season of the Force event where Space Mountain will transform into “Hyperspace Mountain” where guests will join an X-wing Starfighter battle. Hollywood Studios will have fireworks set to Star Wars music on weekend nights. The 3D Star Tours ride will be updated to include characters from The Force Awakens, there will be a re-imagined Jedi Training Camp, and a new Star Wars Launch Bay which will have glimpses behind the scenes of movies and offer some games.

Even if you missed the joy that came from being a Star Wars Nerd, and you don’t really care about these Disney Parks additions, if you have kids it is entirely possible you will get pulled into the Star Wars Universe with the new round of movies coming out.  So, keep these new park additions in mind in case you or your kids get as hooked to Star Wars as I did!

I can just about guarantee my family will be heading to Star Wars Land as soon as it opens…in however many years that is!

  1. We are going Labor Day week this year so we will scout out any small changes this year.

And yes, we will be there once it opens. Probably a trip to each park that year!

    Gonna need some more points
