1 Amex Membership Rewards Point Worth $15 on Amazon!

Please note this site has financial relationships with American Express and this post may contain affiliate links. Read my Advertiser Disclosure policy here to learn more about my partners.

You can use various types of credit card points such as Citi ThankYou, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Amex Membership Rewards to pay for your Amazon purchases at different redemption rates. Normally I do not recommend using points in this manner since the rate at which you can redeem the points for Amazon purchases is usually pretty poor compared to other redemption options. However, every now and then a really lucrative promo comes out where it makes since to use points, or rather a point, towards an Amazon purchase in order to save!

Right now you can redeem as few as one Amex Membership Reward point to save $15 on Amazon purchases of $50 or more! That makes one Membership Reward point worth $15 towards an Amazon purchase via this deal.

Amazon Discount

  • First, put at least $50 in eligible Amazon items in your cart (Amazon gift cards don’t seem to work though other retailer gift cards did).
  • Select an Amex Membership Rewards card from your Amazon account as the method of payment for this purchase.   Remember, normally you would select your Chase Freedom® this 4th quarter since it is paying out 5x on Amazon.com!
  • Link your Amex Membership Rewards to your Amazon account if you haven’t already.
  • Use promo code SWP9AXP15
  • See $15 deducted from your order total

Note that if you have used Membership Reward points for an Amazon purchase in the last 24 months this will not work from your account. It did not work from my account presumably because I have used a Membership Reward points for a similar offer in the past. However, it worked just fine from my dad’s account.

Amazon Membership Rewards promo

I stocked up on some Retailer gift cards like Starbucks that I know I will give to teachers and similar over the holidays, so you can consider a similar route if you aren’t need of any specific items right now.

  1. This didn’t work for me! I have my Amex account linked already, but when I put in the code it says it cannot be applied. Any ideas?

    • Amanda, have you ever redeemed a MR point on Amazon? If not are you sure your purchase was eligible (ie sold by Amazon, not Amazon gift cards).

  2. It didn’t work for me. I tried to purchase iphone case and starbucks gift card using my Amex MR points which was already linked to my account.
I got promo code error message.

    • Kay, are you 100% sure you haven’t redeemed a MR point in the past? I think that is why it didn’t work for my account.

  3. This one seems a bit of a botch. My order last night for $50 Netflix eGift went through with promo code, got confirmation email for order with $1=143 MR points, then $15 off, then remainder billed to Amex. Then nothing, no egift card arrived this morning. When I checked order status, it says both processing *and* cancelled.

Waited, then contacted Amazon chat. Their rep couldn’t sort it out either, just cancelled the order and gave me a $15 credit on my account. So I used that credit to get my Netflix eGift for $35 instead. Anywho….. don’t assume this one will just work.

  4. On my account it worked easy peasy. I had some difficulty with my husbands. I went to my account, payment methods, pay with points. I had to enter his AMEX again, then went to checkout and it worked with no problems.

  5. Be careful with your points!! I am more than two hours trying to get my points back in my Amex that Amazon took without my authorization and both companies are playing ping pong with me. This is very frustrating.
I never linked my credit card with an Amazon account and never changed the payment method (as they said I did) the window showing the points never open to let me know how many points they will take. I know what I do. This is not right because is a rip off!! Once the transaction is made nobody can help you as usual. So when you get your statement is too late!! For a purchase that was not even $50.00 Amazon and American Express ripped me off with 11,000 points!! You can get a much better deal purchasing an airline ticket. I do not recommend use points with Amazon.
