Certain hotel loyalty programs, such as Choice Privileges, don’t get as much attention on the miles and points blogs as other programs. On the one hand that is sometimes warranted because of unfriendly policies or less than stellar properties, but on the other hand, there can still be value to be had from these programs.

Along those lines, I was very happy when I learned that Choice Privileges eliminated the rule that points expire after a certain period of time even if you remained active in the program, so I was happy to share that and some other program enhancements I recommend you check out in this post.

I was also thrilled to host a giveaway of 20,000 Choice Privileges points and Gold elite status to a lucky Mommy Points reader courtesy of Choice Privileges. The giveaway was open to those who shared where they would like to redeem their Choice points, and there were some fantastic ideas in the entries including hotels in or near:

  • Zion National Park
  • Bahamas
  • Kennedy Space Center
  • New York City
  • Paris
  • Oslo
  • Honolulu
  • Kauai
  • Rome
  • London
  • Venice
  • Sydney
  • Grand Cayman
  • Crested Butte
  • Tokyo
  • Aruba
  • Jackson Hole

Those are some big-time vacation destinations where you can use Choice points not only at their own budget to mid-range properties, but also at some independent luxury “Preferred” hotels starting at just 25,000 points per night. While Choice might not be the best primary hotel loyalty program for many of us, to ignore them completely would not be wise as they have a massive footprint of over 6,300 properties around the globe, and offer some pretty decent redemption deals in some pretty big name spots.

Untitled design (5)Congratulations to Pajshua who was randomly selected as the winner of 20,000 Choice points and Gold elite status! Pajshua said that they would like to redeem their Choice points at the Cambria Hotel and Suites in Rapid City, South Dakota for their family road trip this summer to Mt. Rushmore.

That sounds like a great use of the points to me, and as a side note there are actually around a half dozen Choice properties in Rapid City, South Dakota. Guess how many SPG and Hyatt properties there are combined in that city? That’s right, none, which is exactly why you should diversify your points and programs whenever possible.

Also, for anyone interested in a similar journey, here is a recap of Grandma and Grandpa Points’ trip to Mt. Rushmore!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to enter, and we hope to share more of these types of giveaways soon!

  1. Congrats! Your comment about SPG & Hyatt in Rapid City really struck home with me. We live in Colorado Springs. My younger daughter went to college at Washington State University, about 80 miles south of Spokane. Once we left Denver, there were exactly ZERO Hyatt and SPG properties on the 1,300 mile drive. Hyatt & SPG are wonderful if your travel only takes you to big cities or resorts, but if you do any kind of driving trips, especially in the West, then Holiday Inn Express, Hampton, Fairfield, Choice become your lodging of choice.
