How to Combine SPG Points With Another Member for Free

One of the great things about being a miles and points family is that in some situations you can combine your miles and points with other family members to lock in those award redemptions you are after. In general, hotel loyalty programs allow this type of transfer between spouses or family members for free more frequently than airlines (with the exception of the airline family pooling type accounts that JetBlue and British Airways allow), but every program handles it differently.

I have been meaning to lock in some 2016-2017 ski trip reservations at a Starwood Preferred Guest property (that I honestly should have done months ago), but since my SPG balance is starting to run a little low, I needed to beef up my account with some points my husband has in order to make the award redemption we were after.

Skiing is amazing. Skiing directly into a hotel you booked on points...amazing x 2! @sheratonsteamboat____ #spgamex #spglife

Fortunately, SPG allows for free between transfers for SPG members who reside at the same address if both members have had the same residential address for more than 30 days before the transfer.

There is no requirement that the household members be married, related, or even friends, just that they both consent to the transfer. The transfer can be requested online using the form shown above or by calling 1-888-625-4988.

Be aware that the transfer is not instant and can take a week or so to process. By doing this you can not only beef up your account balance to make the hotel redemption you want, but also to get to some great redemption thresholds to pull the trigger on Nights and Flights packages where you get 5 nights of a hotel award stay + airline miles for Category 3 and 4 hotels so you really maximize your points.

Have you ever combined your SPG points with another household member to get the award you wanted? How long did the transfer take?

  1. I just did last week when the sign up bonus points for my wife’s new SPG card posted on her account. I transferred them all to mine so it is easier to manage the family’s points in just one place. I wish airlines would allow us to do that. My kid’s (ages 10 and 7) have a good amount of miles in their AA and Delta accounts for paid tickets we flew but not enough for a ticket redemption so the miles just sit there without being used.

  2. Ugh. Starwood just instituted a change that these transfers must be made in 1,000 point increments. The screen looks just like the one you have above but now states: “Transfers must be made in 1,000 point increments.”
