A goal that many traveling families share is one of wanting to save money on Disney vacations. While there are some ways to do that, there are certain types of Disney expenses that are just hard to really to knock down significantly. Historically a really good way to save across the board on Disney trips is to find ways to purchase Disney Gift Cards at a discount, or at least with a rewards earning credit card that earns a good bonus at wherever you are purchasing the gift cards.

If you are targeted for a new Amex Offer that awards 20% back, up to a $250 statement credit, at Sam’s Club, there may be a very good way to save a decent amount on Disney gift cards sold at Sam’s Club. If you don’t have that specific Amex Offer you can still take advantage of this type of strategy via the 5x bonus quarterly category bonus of wholesale clubs on the Chase Freedom, though your savings won’t be as great.

Buy Disney Gift Cards for Less at Sam’s Club

Sam’s Club sells many types of gift cards, including Disney Gift Card packs with three $50 gift cards for just $143.98. That means you are saving $6.02 for every $150 spent on Disney gift cards at a savings rate of about 4%. A 4% savings at Disney isn’t overly impressive, but it is a good start considering you can fund those gift cards to your Disney vacation account and then use it on everything from park tickets, to food in the parks, to your Disney hotels, and more.

However, what makes this a great deal is that you can probably stack it with the current (targeted) Amex Offer to get a one-time 20% statement credit up to $250 on purchases of $100 or more at Sam’s Clubs. This Amex Offer was on both of my Amex small business cards including the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card and Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express.

Let’s assume you want to spend close to $2,500 on Disney gift cards at Sam’s to go towards a big Disney family trip and fund your Disney Vacation Account (so you don’t have to keep messing with $50 gift cards, among other things). Here is some math on this situation…

Purchase 9 $150 Disney Gift Card packs @ $143.98 each = $1,295.82

Value of 9 $150 Disney Gift Card packs = $1,350 to spend at Disney

$54.18 saved by purchasing gift cards @ Sam’s Club

One $1,295.82 eligible transaction at Sam’s Club = full $250 Amex statement credit via Sam’s Club Amex Offer as outlined above

Final out of pocket price of $1,045.82 for $1,350 worth of Disney Gift Cards

Total of $304.18 saved on $1,350 worth of Disney Gift Cards

That is a total 22.5% savings off the top on Disney expenses for very little work, which is not bad at all. In fact, it is really good. Make sure to also factor in the value of the points you will earn on the Amex Card you use to pay for your Sam’s Club purchase.

Another thing to note if you go this route and set up a Disney Vacation Account you fund primarily with Disney Gift Cards is that you will be eligible for a $20 Disney Gift Card for every $1000 you spend on qualified vacation purchases with your Disney Vacation Account prior to December 31, 2017. That inches the savings up even higher.

This deal won’t be for everyone, but it is worth a look if you have the targeted Amex Offer to get a $250 statement credit on a Sam’s Club purchase on one (or more) of your Amex Cards, and you have some big Disney expenses coming up.

Who plans on taking advantage of this offer to save over 22% on upcoming Disney expenses?

  1. Fyi Disney now allows you to combine Disney gift card balances to one card (up to $1,000 per card). This is useful if you do buy multiple $50 gift cards but don’t want to mess with the Disney Vacation Account. So if you buy (20) $50 cards, you can move all $1,000 to one of those cards. You can do this in the Disney Gift card website.

***Just make sure you keep ALL transferred gift cards just in case there is any fraud***

  2. I see my SPG business card has the Sams club offer but other 3 AMEX cards do not. Three of my AMEX accounts also have $20 back after spending $100 at Undercover Tourist. The cost of Disney tickets through Undercover Tourist is generally a little cheaper than Disney’s website.

  3. Awesome Amex Offer. Upgrading to Annual Passes on our next trip. Have saved hundreds on Disney Gift Cards thanks to all these offesr.
