As you may well know, the Super Bowl is just two days away here in Houston. We didn’t end up having to make any “tough” decisions about splurging on tickets or not since my husband’s team didn’t make it past the second round of the playoffs, but since I’m always fascinated by what miles and points can do when rates are really high I took a peek at hotel rooms in Houston for this upcoming weekend.

Given that I’ve heard of friends in downtown Houston basically renting out couches for hundreds of dollars per night this week, it is no surprise that hotel rooms are scarce and expensive. Of the hotels that still have rooms available for this weekend, many are in the $500 – $1,000 range per night for rooms that normally would be $100 – $200 per night on an average night. However, as is often the case, Hyatt Gold Passport points can really come in handy if you find yourself needing a place to crash in Houston this weekend.

On the night of the Super Bowl you have the tough choice of spending either $499+ dollars to stay at the Hyatt Place Houston Bush Airport…or spend just 5,000 Hyatt points. You have your pick of either a king room or one with two doubles.

The two nights before the Super Bowl (tonight and tomorrow) don’t show availability at that particular property, but there is availability at the two Hyatts closest to us just a bit north of town. Frankly, though there will be a 30-ish mile drive into Houston, these two properties are actually pretty nice and I’ve stayed at and reviewed both more than once.

The Hyatt Place Houston – The Woodlands has award availability, points + cash availability, and rates under $200 per night this entire weekend. The nearby Hyatt Centric The Woodlands has pretty high cash rates in the $600 – $800 range per night, but it has award rooms for just 15,000 points per night.

A few more options I can personally recommend if you don’t mind being 30 miles or so from the main Super Bowl action are Westin The Woodlands which has standard rooms available Friday night using SPG points…

…and The Embassy Suites Hughes Landing The Woodlands also has standard suites available using Hilton Honors points all weekend.

Have a great time if you are in Houston this weekend taking part of some of the Super Bowl excitement!
