Using 5,000 Points Per Night at the Intercontinental Real Santo Domingo

One of the best deals in the miles and points world is unquestionably the quarterly IHG Point Breaks list where you can book IHG hotels around the world for just 5,000 points per night, which can cost you less than $30 per night if you purchase your IHG points during some periodic sales. You never know which properties will be on the list, and while many of the properties available via PointBreaks are usually Candlewood Suites or Holiday Inn Express type properties in middle-of-nowhere-locations, sometimes there are some real gems that pop up.

On the most recent list, one of the gems was the new InterContinental Real Santo Domingo. This property sold out of Point Breaks rooms within hours of going live, but for those who nabbed it in time it was insane deal to spend just 5,000 IHG points per night instead of the usual $200+ per night.

A Mommy Points’ reader just got back from a Point Breaks fueled trip to this very property and I wanted to share a few of this thoughts and photos as it is a good example of just how far only 5,000 points can go if you pay attention and jump on great deals when they come your way.

What a fabulous hotel! The facility is top-notch and the service is excellent. The Intercontinental Real Santo Domino officially opened for business very recently in November 2016, so it’s practically brand new and still even has the new paint smell.

The parking garage was underground and you collect a ticket as you go in. Hotel guests can park in the garage for free and come and go since the front desk validates tickets for guests. Turndown service was given on each night of the stay, and this even included slippers and a small rug that were placed by the side of the bed. Checkout time was normally noon, but a 1PM checkout request was granted when asked without a problem.

The infinity-edge pool and its bar are located on the mezzanine level. As the photos indicate, it’s a very, very nice pool. There are also two jacuzzis and a gym that is on the same level as the pool. The gym appeared to be very appointed with many machines, but we didn’t give it any use on this visit.

The hotel is located in an upscale neighborhood called Piantini. Several blocks away is the equally swanky JW Marriott, which is connected to the ultra high-end Blue Mall with stores like Louis Vuitton, Rolex, Johnny Walker, and a Range Rover dealership. Nearby to the hotel there is also a pretty fancy Krispy Kreme.

Thanks to Matt for sharing a few photos and impressions from his visit to the InterContinental Real Santo Domingo that was available for just 5,000 IHG points per night. Looks like one heck of a deal to me. Heck, the pool alone looks like it was worth 5,000 points per night!

  1. My wife & I stayed at this property for four nights on Point Breaks two weeks ago. Beautiful new property in a nice neighborhood, urban setting. We went to the #1, #2, and #4 restaurants (of 520) rated on trip advisor, all within walking distance of the Intercontinental. Great service. Fitness center was nicely furnished with new machines, some free weights, and yoga mats. Pool area is a wonderful place to hang. Next Point Break trip is the Crowne Plaza in San Jose, Costa Rica later this month.

  2. We just checked out of this hotel a few days ago.I was only able to nab 3 nights at the 5000 points rate.We did love this hotel. While we have Plat status, it does not give you access to the Executive lounge! We did manage to get access and it was well worth it.Views were superb from this height.Wine flowed. The service is wonderful. We did not experience turn down service though. Pool is cold but amazing! A bit of a language barrier if you dodnot know any Spanish. Staff was extremely nice .Gym was nice but we did not like the machines with the pulley systems.Beauty salon had a great 2 for 1 coupon.Got my brows tinted for $15.
