Hotel elite status can make your hotel stays more comfortable, and can even save you real money if you score free breakfasts, lounge access, or even some waived resort or parking fees as a result of your status. Of course you can earn hotel elite status by staying in hotels tons of nights each year, but sometimes you can also get hotel elite status by just getting certain credit cards or even leveraging one status for another.

Along those lines, a few weeks before the new World of Hyatt program took effect, I strongly recommended that those with Hyatt status make sure they have matched that status to M life status. There were a few reasons for that, but one was the hope of matching back from M life to Hyatt after March 1st…especially if your Hyatt status was dropping on that date.

I suspected that after the World of Hyatt program launched, those with M life Gold or higher status could match it back to Hyatt Explorist status, which provides very real perks like four club access certificates each year.

My husband dropped to general member when the new World of Hyatt launched, but he then requested a match from his M life status to Hyatt, and after a few weeks….

He now has second tier Hyatt Explorist status that normally requires 30 eligible nights in a calendar year! He actually matched from M life Platinum status, but I have read plenty of reports of those matching from M life Gold having the same success.

He received the four club access awards that come with Hyatt Explorist status, and they are valid for one year from when they were issued. Each award grants Club Access for your room for a stay of up to seven days.

You can request the status match by going through M life or Hyatt, but it seems a bit easier to just go through Hyatt and the  Twitter account. They will need proof of your M life status, your M life number, your Hyatt number, etc. These requests seem to process in batches, so it may take a few weeks.

Of course if you are in the market for M life status you can do the reverse and use your current Hyatt status to request M life status

Even the M life Pearl tier offers free self-parking which can really save you on a Vegas trip. Free valet parking is offered at the M life Gold level and above. You can view the full chart of M life perks and discounts here.

Congrats to those who were able to leverage elite status in one program to get elite access in another. Anyone else have four new Hyatt Club Access awards to use over the next 12 months?

  1. Summer,
Hyatt seems to be your “go to” and heavily written about/blogged hotel chain. As I don’t see it in your “Advertiser Disclosure” below, I have to ask: Do you have any financial relationship with the Hyatt chain? Thanks —

    • “Susan”, I’m happy to answer, but I can’t help but notice you are posting from a large number of aliases recently, often with questions or responses to stir the pot. I don’t mind questions or differing points of views, but please stick with one name in the comments at the very least. To answer your question, no, I have no financial relationship with Hyatt.

  2. Question…. if a Hyatt property doesn’t have a club lounge, can you use the upgrade for a different perk (free breakfast in the restaurant)?

  3. I also got Explorist by M Life status match. I have an award stay coming up this summer at Hyatt Regency Chicago, and when I called to apply my club excess award, the rep tried for 10-15 mins and said no club access available!!! She tried a few different dates and still could not find availability!! She asked me to keep calling back to see it becomes available.
Btw, club rooms are available for my dates! So, it seems like the club access awards might be useless at some properties!? It’s frustrating!!

    • I think this most be a mistake of some sort. I can’t swear I know everything about these awards, but that doesn’t sound right.

      • Club access awards are capacity restricted by each hotel. If it’s during a popular travel dates the availability might be 0. Another factor is how many rooms with club access booked + number of globalist reservations.
So, book the club access awards as early as possible!

  4. Yay! Glad you husband got the Explorist status….I got it did too!! Since I”m a Hyatt girl, this is a big score for my family. I will be all over those club passes!

~Thanks for the heads up to match to MLife earlier.. this is what enabled me to swing this. 🙂

  5. Thanks so much for posting this reminder. I had previously matched to MLife Gold when I was planning a trip to Vegas but it didn’t occur to me to try to match it back to Hyatt now. I’m feeling optimistic that I will receive Discoverist status since the WOH page says that if you match Hyatt Discoverist to MLife you get MLife Gold.

    • Oops I meant Explorist! And I already received a reply back from Hyatt via twitter that they requested it and it should be processed in 7-10 days!

  6. Thank you Summer! I’ve never had any status privileges so I am thrilled to successfully get in on this one. Thank you for blogging about it.

  7. Does anyone know where I can get a list of the best hyatts to use the club access at?

I have one stay booked at the Grand Hyatt New York and plan to use another at the Hyatt in Maui but I would like to find two more great hyatts to use them at. : )

  8. Thank you so much for this brilliant article, Summer! I matched my Hyatt status to my MLife status in December and never thought about doing the reverse. I will be very happy if I get some type of Hyatt status since my Hyatt silver reverted to general member in March.

  9. Us too! My Diamond transferred over to Explorist, but then we matched my husband’s status for M Life. Having 8 upgrades is much better than 4!

  10. My husband and I called Hyatt and requested our status match from M Life Gold to Hyatt, it took more than a week. I received mine but my husband did not, so we called and requested it a second time. Not giving up on this one.

  11. I’m new to your site. I lost all status with Hyatt and I’m not a member of MLife. However, I’m Diamond with Hilton. Can I join and match to MLife and then try Hyatt? Or will Hyatt match my Diamond Hilton?

    • EK, Hyatt and MLife have a partnership, so the ability to move status back and forth as noted in this post (and previous ones on the subject) are specific to these two programs.

Strictly speaking, there aren’t any permanent promotions that will allow you to leverage your Hilton status to another program, but some do run occasional status match challenges where they announce they will do so. Sometimes you may even be able to request a status match challenge, but these will often require you to meet specific goals to attain (or keep) the status beyond a trial period (stay 6 nights over three months, etc).

A status match challenge is usually with the intent of getting you to switch from the competing program, so they may be limited (can only do so once every few years, or even once a lifetime) so you may want to do some research (archives, etc) before jumping in…

  12. I’m glad the match worked out and that you can get additional benefits out of it. I haven’t been to Vegas in a while so I haven’t been able to access M-Life since you have to go to a desk at a casino to get a card.

  13. Thank you, Summer! Tips like this is one of the reasons I love your site and read it religiously. I contacted Hyatt via Twitter and they said my match to M-Life gold will be completed within 7 days. I went down to a Discoverist so I’m looking forward to matching higher! Thanks again for the reminder. I matched my M-life earlier this year, based on your recommendation, and it’s now paying off.

  14. If I was previously a Hyatt Platinum member solely due to holding the CC, would this have allowed me to status match to M-Life Gold, & then back to Hyatt Explorist?
Or would I have needed to be Hyatt Diamond for all that to happen?
I’m trying to see what I may have missed out on…because I didn’t status match M-Life prior to the switch…

  15. Summer,

How long did it take your request to match?I requested April 1st and then called April 10th. Still nothing.
