Good Delta SkyMiles Flash Sale to the Caribbean and Florida!

It’s sometimes entertaining to make fun of Delta SkyMiles, and they absolutely can and do make no-notice changes to their non-existent award chart, but I actually kind of like them, and today I got to put the Delta miles I have earned from the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express and similar to really good use!

Delta has somewhat regular ‘flash sales’ where they discount the regular award prices for flights to certain rotating regions. If the dates and destinations align with where you want to go then this is absolutely when you want to cash those miles in for travel. This time around the SkyMiles flash sale is for flights this fall to the Caribbean and Florida. Yes, please!

Delta says that flights available via this flash sale start at 20,000 miles per round trip if you book by 11:59 pm ET on May 10, 2017 and travel from September 26 through November 14, 2017. In reality I see flights starting at even fewer miles than that. This sale is valid for travel from the contiguous 48 United States, Alaska, and Canada to Florida and the Caribbean destinations listed below. Note that it does specifically exclude Key West and Sarasota from the eligible Florida destinations.

The Delta Flash Sale eligible destinations include:

  • Antigua
  • Bermuda
  • Bonaire
  • Bridgetown
  • Florida
  • Freeport
  • Grand Cayman
  • Grenada
  • Havana
  • Marsh Harbour
  • Nassau
  • North Eleuthera
  • Saint Kitts
  • Saint Maarten

A few examples of round trip prices I saw available include:

  • Houston – Grand Cayman 25,000 miles
  • JFK – Miami 17,000 miles
  • Seattle – Miami 20,000 miles
  • Houston – Orlando 18,000 miles
  • Los Angeles – Nassau 25,000 miles

While Delta has no award chart, standard domestic round trips often start at 25,000 miles and trips to the Caribbean start at 35,000 miles.

Our school district has (finally!) instituted a fall break beginning next school year, so while I toyed around with the idea of tagging a Bahamas trip onto our already planned Grand Cayman spring break trip next year via a pretty awesome 4,000 mile British Airways flight between the islands, this sale turned out to be the ‘sign’ I needed to not go forward with that plan and keep things simpler that week.

Instead of doubling down on our spring break trip, the dates I needed for the fall break were available via this flash sale at way fewer miles than I had been seeing anywhere with a mostly reasonable itinerary, so I pulled the trigger and we will get to check out the new Grand Hyatt Baha Mar that we scored when it was briefly just 15,000 points per night + take the girls to the Atlantis water park for a day! My oldest daughter has been begging to return to Atlantis and the Bahamas for years, so I’m pretty thrilled by how I put my SkyMiles to use for a family journey. There won’t be any lie flat seats or trips to Australia with these miles now, but there will be family fun so I’m calling it a big win.

Fingers crossed some of you can make this Delta flash sale work for some fall family getaways!

  1. I love a “sale” when they have no actual prices. 20,000 SM’s to Nassau is a good deal, assuming you can find any dates, even for hurricane season:)

    • I know that does make it tough, but 25,000 miles RT for weekend trips to places like Nassau, Grand Cayman, etc. was absolutely lower than what I normally see from them! And yes, hurricane season can be a risk unless you are booking towards the later portion of the sale for sure!

  2. Agree. SkyMiles offer decent value from time to time. I’ve been to Europe 4 times at the(ever increasing) low level in the last 3 years.
    AA on the other hand………

    • Ha ha, yeah every dog/mile has its day, so I like to have a nice assortment of dogs, er, miles. 😉

  3. I took advantage of the Hurricane Flash Sale last year and got burned, not going to bite this time.
