While there were some technical glitches that delayed the process by a few hours, you can now book Southwest flights for summer 2018 travel all the way through August 6, 2018! As is typical when Southwest extends their schedule, there have also been some route additions and subtractions. A notable subtraction is that Southwest will no longer serve Flint, Michigan, as of June 6, 2018.
Summer 2018 Southwest Route Changes
However, in better news, Southwest is starting up daily service on July 8, 2018, between San Antonio and both Oakland and Ft. Lauderdale. Also from San Antonio, Southwest will resume its seasonal daily service to and from Cancun on June 7, 2018
There is even more good news for Texans who fly Southwest as they will begin seasonal Saturday service from Houston to Grand Cayman starting on June 9, 2018. This means that on Saturdays in June, Southwest will offer 18 flights between Houston and a total of 10 international destinations!
Continuing their California focus, they are kicking off daily nonstop flights from Oakland to Indianapolis, Minneapolis, and Orlando beginning on July 15, 2018. They are also giving away 100,000,000 Rapid Reward points to California Rapid Rewards members. The rest of us in the lower 48 can enter this contest to win 100,000 Rapid Reward points.
Pittsburgh and Raleigh will gain seasonal Saturday Southwest service to Cancun beginning June 9, 2018. On Sunday, June 10, 2018, Southwest will also fly between Baltimore/Washington and Nassau, The Bahamas.

Book Your Southwest 2018 Family Travel Now
If you find some Southwest flights that will work for your family for Summer 2018 travel, I recommend locking them in now. With Southwest Rapid Rewards you can refund your Rapid Rewards points without penalty or simply reprice your award if you notice that the points price has dropped. If you are short on Southwest Rapid Reward points you can transfer them in 1:1 from the Chase Ultimate Rewards program and cards like the Sapphire Reserve or Ink Preferred.
Booking Southwest Summer 2018 flights with cash now is also a pretty good plan if you find something you like since you can get a credit to use on a future Southwest flight if the price drops and you reprice your reservation.
From the amazing Companion Pass to reasonable award prices for many flights, Southwest is a great option for families looking to plan a points-fueled Summer 2018 getaway. As an example of just how good they can be, United would want at least 35,000 miles + taxes for an economy saver round trip award to Cancun, but as shown below, you can fly Southwest over a long weekend in June 2018 round trip from Houston to Cancun from 13,104 Rapid Reward points + taxes.
If you flew on select weekdays the price could go even lower than that. If you happened to have a Southwest Companion Pass, then two could fly for that points price with just two sets of taxes owed.
I’m really looking forward to our Summer 2018 Southwest flights from Hobby. Were you able to lock in any of your family’s 2018 flights with today’s newest Southwest Airlines schedule extension?
