The new IHG Rewards PointBreaks list is out for travel from January 29 – April 30, 2018. As promised, there are now three tiers of PointBreaks prices – 5,000, 10,000, and 15,000 IHG points per night instead of the old flat rate of 5,000 points per night. Along with the increased rates was a promise from IHG of more higher-end properties in more locations.
A quick look a the Flyertalk PointsBreaks thread shows that many folks are not happy with this new list, but I’m not sure that I totally agree. I mean, it isn’t a mind-blowing list, but there are opportunities on there that are a very nice deal. PointBreaks are always a crapshoot as to whether something on the list will line up with your travel plans in the next few months, but here’s a couple of better-than-average deals that jumped out to me as being potentially useful.
Finding good deals on the new IHG PointBreaks List
Via this new PointBreaks list, the Holiday Inn Express London Hammersmith has rooms available for 15,000 points per night for 2 adults and 2 kids under 12, or 1 older and 1 younger child, featuring a double bed and a sofa bed. I’m sure this isn’t the fanciest joint in London, but getting a family of four a place to stay in London with breakfast included for just 15,000 IHG points per night is very, very good.
The Hotel Indigo in Helsinki, Finland, looks very nice for just 15,000 IHG points per night.
While I don’t think they have great snow at the moment, you could headquarter a trip to the American Southwest out of the Crowne Plaza Albuquerque for just 10,000 points per night and be within 30 minutes to some of the closest ski resorts.
While it isn’t on my immediate radar, being able to book the normally 30,000 points per night InterContinental Nairobi for 10,000 points per night strikes me as a solid deal. Similarly, booking a room for four at the normally 35,000 points per night InterContinental Real Santo Domingo for 15,000 points per night is still a good deal…even if it was a better deal a year ago.
Purchase IHG Points for .65 cents per point
Along with the new PointBreaks tiers comes the ability to use points + cash to secure awards. I saw the option to book a 15,000 points per night property with 10,000 points + $50 or 5,000 points + $80. For the cash portion of the award, that is the same as paying 1 cent per point in the first example or 8/10 of a cent per point in the second example. In contrast, right now you can purchase IHG points for about .65 cents of a point each if you max out the current promo that awards up to a 75% bonus on purchased IHG points.
At that rate, 5k points per night properties are about $33 per night, 10k points per night properties are about $65 per night, and 15k points per night properties are about $98 per night. If you have the IHG credit card you will also get 10% of your redeemed points back, up to 100,000 points each year. You will want to compare the going cash rates to those rates and make sure the property is actually a good deal to book via PointBreaks.
Here is the full PointBreaks list – remember you can book up to two stays per property and the best properties may go quickly.

Of course I wish we had our pick of all these properties for just 5,000 points per night, but that isn’t our new reality and it doesn’t mean there aren’t still some good deals to be had. Just be creative, flexible, and do the math. Will any of the new PointBreaks properties work for your family’s spring travels?
