Stock up and Earn Double British Airways Points Shopping This Weekend

We rack up tens of thousands of miles each year just going about our normal online shopping by starting at an airline shopping portal. Those are easy miles just sitting there waiting to be earned as you purchase a new jacket, order paper towels, score a new bedspread, stock up on flea medicine for your dog, or buy things in the next size for your kids. If you time your purchases right, you can amplify the earnings with more miles per dollar than normal. I’ve earned 10, 20, 30 miles per dollar or even more in some situations when the payout for certain retailers temporarily jumps up!

Often times we don’t know that mileage payouts will increase until it happens, but this week is an exception to that rule as we have advance notice that the British Airways Avios eStore will be awarding “Double Avios” this weekend from February 23 – February 25, 2018! They do a weekend like this usually once or twice a year, and historically the payout rates are very good when this happens.

To give an idea of some of the retailers and payouts available currently, here is a sampling:

  • Walmart 4x
  • Apple 3x
  • Saks Fifth Avenue 6x
  • Macy’s 7x
  • Target 2x
  • Fandango 10x
  • Harrods 8x
  • 1-800-PetMeds 10x
  • Etsy 6x
  • eBags 10x
  • Home Depot 3x
  • Pottery Barn 6x

Who knows if some of those rates may fluctuate before the Double Avios bonus weekend begins on Friday, but theoretically most of them should be double that amount come Friday. I will say that about 2/3 of the time, the Avios eStore has the highest payout for the retailers I use, so they have been getting a large share of my online purchases even outside of the Double Avios weekend. Avios typically take over a month to post, but they generally make it into your account eventually.

Remember that even if you don’t fly British Airways with regularity, their Avios points are very valuable if you fly their partners such as American or Alaska (or even Virgin America!), as they use a distance based award chart that means you can book those partners starting at just 7,500 Avios each way.

Since we know that a double Avios shopping weekend is coming, if you have any purchases to make from a retailer in the Avios eStore that can wait until Friday, it might be worth it to see just how good the payouts might be for your purchase.

  1. Of course they’re doing a double Avios weekend, I just bought a $3100 Big Ass Fan for work! Oh well, at least I collected 3x at Home Depot. 🙂
