United has a new promotion that will save you 20% off of the normal number of miles required for a saver economy roundtrip award from the contiguous United States and Alaska to some pretty cool spots including Portugal, Iceland, Singapore, and Australia. This promotion is valid for travel on select dates in May and June 2018, so if your school district is like ours and ends in early June, some of these dates even extend into the start of your summer vacation!

Discounted United Routes Include:

  • Porto (OPO) 48,000 award miles + taxes and fees from $75 (normally 60,000)
  • Reykjavik (KEF) 48,000 award miles + taxes and fees from $60 (normally 60,000)
  • Sydney (SYD) 64,000 award miles + taxes and fees from $55 (normally 80,000)
  • Singapore (SIN) 64,000 award miles + taxes and fees from $125 (normally 80,000)

If you want to save 20% of your miles when you head to Porto, Singapore or Sydney, you can travel from May 4, 2018 – June 17, 2018. For Iceland, you can travel from May 23, 2018 – June 17, 2018. In all cases you must book by March 2, 2018, to get the discounted saver award rates. The Discounted Saver Award is combinable with other award types as long as the itinerary is roundtrip.

Flying 17 hours and 30 minutes nonstop from Houston to Sydney in economy doesn’t sound super exciting, but doing it for just 32,000 miles each way is a pretty solid deal. Economy saver availability over these dates was very good.

Iceland is very much on the list of 10 places I most want to visit, so flying from Houston to Newark and then onto Reykjavik for just 24,000 United miles each way also doesn’t sound bad at all…especially if I could wrangle an Economy Plus seat thanks to elite status.

It’s great when the award you want goes on sale, so don’t miss out if one of these destinations is on your list for late May or early June travel this year. Thanks to Loyalty Traveler for spotting this sale!

    Oh good lord.
MP, that’s a looooooooooooooooooooooooooong way in UAL coach.
Frankly, at my age, not sure I would do it for free.

  2. “Flying 17 hours and 30 minutes nonstop from Houston to Sydney in economy doesn’t sound super exciting”
Would be great only if I could have an entire section to lay down to sleep on the overnight flight.

  3. I saw this last night and I am thinking this is a great deal. I don’t remember seeing United do this in the last year or so. Is this common?

    • It is common for them to do some sort of discounted awards every now and then, these are pretty good destinations at a pretty good time though!
