Ten Delta Award Flights Available for Less Than 10,000 Miles

Once upon a time, Delta SkyMiles became off-handedly referred to as SkyPesos by some who thought them to not be worth as much per mile as some other types of frequent flyer miles. There was certainly some truth to the SkyPesos term at the time, but times change. I bought into the notion that SkyMiles were not worth my time for far longer than I should have, and only in recent years have learned that SkyMiles are actually an extremely valuable airline mileage currency for my family. We have flown on many Delta award flights in the last couple of years, and have even used all of our SkyMiles at times and had to transfer in Amex Membership Reward points to beef our Delta account balance back up.

Delta SkyMiles are not perfect, and they very notoriously do not have a published award chart. I don’t think that is a good thing in general, but it does mean that there are some truly good Delta awards available at times if you go looking. While some similar airline frequent flyer programs have a bottom floor of 12,500 miles for a one-way domestic saver award via their award chart, Delta doesn’t have that same floor, so you can book many domestic awards for less than you could with other programs.

Since five different Delta Amex credit card offers are temporarily increased right now, I thought this to be a good time to highlight ten different domestic Delta routes you can book today for less than 10,000 miles each direction.

Ten Delta Award Flights Available for Under 10,000 SkyMiles

As Delta has no award chart, the various award flights can and do vary in price from day to day and month to month, often in some way tied to rising and falling of the cash price of the tickets. However, time and time again, we have found very fairly priced domestic economy awards available on Delta for less than we could through United or American, and often at logical flight times. If you have some flexibility with your travel plans, I highly recommend using the five-week flexible date search when checking out the price of Delta awards.

Here are ten different Delta award flights I found available today on various dates for less than 10,000 SkyMiles each direction.

  • LaGuardia – Orlando 5,000 miles
  • LaGuardia – Miami 5,500 miles
  • Seattle – San Francisco or Los Angeles 6,000 miles
  • Houston – Atlanta 6,000 miles
  • Dallas – LaGuardia 6,000 miles
  • Salt Lake City – San Diego 7,000 miles
  • New York City – Salt Lake City 7,500 miles
  • Minneapolis – Austin 8,500 miles
  • Seattle – Anchorage 9,000 miles
  • Houston – LaGuardia 9,500 miles

As you can see, these are not just random little 200-mile puddle jumper flights, but these are real routes that real families would want to fly. Paying say 7,500 miles each way to fly New York City to Salt Lake City represents a real saving for a family over the 12,500 miles each way that some other programs would want for the same route. For a family of four, that comes to 60,000 total miles round trip instead of the 100,000 miles you could easily spend in another program.

I know there are many families out there who still don’t realize how valuable SkyMiles can be for them, so I encourage you to check out the routes that are interesting to you and do some flexible date searches to spot the cheapest dates to fly using your SkyMiles. We don’t use Delta SkyMiles for everything, but I am very grateful we have some SkyMiles in the bank. If you realize that this program may be a good match for you, I highly recommend grabbing one of the co-branded Delta Amex Cards while the offers are increased until April 11, 2018.

  1. Good inspiration to find those cheap delta award flights. Last month I was able to fly my family of 6 to the Bahamas for 7.5k each one way.

  2. Summer, have you seen any bargains in close-in award availability? (My recent experience is that Delta is charging substantially more miles for any bookings within 3 weeks of departure. In most cases, the value of the extra miles is significantly greater than the $75 close-in fees charged by AA and UA, and the $0 Alaska close-in fee. I am hoping there are at least some cases where DL is competitive for close-in bookings.)

    • UAPhil, they are not my go-to for close-in bookings. As you say, they don’t have a close-in booking fee with cash but the number of miles required is generally much higher for travel within the next week, and then still higher to a lesser extent for the next two weeks. The lowest number of miles is usually, as you say, at least 3 weeks out for DL operated flights.
