Flash Sale: Fly Round Trip to Mexico from 12,000 Delta SkyMiles

If you have read this blog for a while, you have witnessed my 180 degrees shift on Delta SkyMiles. I went from ignoring them and not collecting any measurable number of SkyMiles to wanting as many SkyMiles as I can get my hands on because Delta often has the award flights I want, when I want them, and for less than other airlines. They are not perfect, but darn if I haven’t had good luck with them over the past couple of years for economy award travel in the United States and the Caribbean.

One of the ways that my family has gotten big value from Delta SkyMiles is by booking awards during some of their flash sales when certain awards cost much less than normal – though “normal” is admittedly hard to identify as they have no published award chart.

Fly round trip to Mexico from 12,000 Delta SkyMiles

There is apparently a new Delta SkyMiles flash sale available right now as round trip economy award flights to Mexico are pricing as low as 12,000 miles + taxes/fees.

That is much lower than the normal saver award price of 35,000 SkyMiles! If you want a little extra space, in some cases I am seeing Delta Comfort awards available for just 500 additional miles each way, which seems totally worth it to me.

I haven’t seen an official list of included origins and destinations, so if you have interest in visiting Mexico, my best advice is to fire up Delta.com, use the five-week flexible search calendar, and start looking for award flights to Mexico from your part of the country.

From Houston, I see availability from 12,000 miles round trip to Mexico City in April and May 2018 and then again in September 2018 – November 2018. From Houston to Cancun, I see 25,000 mile round trips in a variety of months, including summer travel. That’s not as cool as 12,000 miles round trip, but it isn’t bad for peak summer travel.

While I haven’t found an official flash sale landing page with Delta, Thrifty Traveler has compiled a list of origins and departures where you might find deals. That said, what they found in their searches and what I found didn’t always match up, so the only surefire way to know for sure is to search for yourself. If you do find something you like, I would lock it in ASAP as we don’t know how long these lower than average prices will last.

While I am actually dying to go to Mexico City, from Houston, the routings to Mexico on Delta operated flights aren’t ideal. Sadly that means I probably won’t be able to make this flash sale work for us, but I would love to hear if your family is able to put it to use!

  1. I booked BWI-CUN for 6500 points one-way (January 2019). Will look for a cheap non-stop home on another airline later this year. Seems like a good time to take the family to the Hyatt Ziva!!!
