Free Breakfast Returns to Hyatt Place Properties Testing a Pay-To-Eat Approach

Earlier this year, Hyatt began testing the elimination of free breakfast at Hyatt Place properties. After stumbling a bit in 2017, Hyatt had been making some truly positive steps forward in early 2018 until this very family-unfriendly idea saw the light of day. Up until that point, the Hyatt Place brand standard was included hot breakfast for all guests. Admittedly, the current iteration of free Hyatt Place breakfast isn’t as good as it used to be, but free for all guests is still a very nice price. This is especially true for traveling families with lots of ‘hangry’ mouths to feed in the mornings.

The old version of free Hyatt Place breakfasts that was pretty good

At the very least, we knew that Hyatt Place Dallas North by the Galleria and Hyatt Place Detroit-Utica tested a policy where a full, free, hot breakfast was no longer included unless you had Globalist elite status or were on a certain type of rate that came with breakfast. The tests seem to have included either a $10 option for full breakfast, or a paid buy-up to the hot items with the continental items included for all.

Current version of Hyatt Place free breakfast

I’ve been wondering what became of that trial, so I did a little detective work to see the current status of Hyatt Place free breakfast. The first good news came when the websites for both the Hyatt Place Dallas North by the Galleria and Hyatt Place Detroit-Utica again reflect free included hot breakfast whereas they did not during the trial.

To be extra sure, I called the Hyatt Place Dallas North property and asked if free breakfast was back. A very friendly woman let me know that indeed that trial is over and free breakfast has returned!

For families about to hit the road for summer vacations, I think the return of free hot breakfast for all at Hyatt Place properties that were running this test is fantastic news. I have an email into Hyatt to see if they have any comments on if there might be other properties still testing a breakfast charge, or if we may see any near-term changes in the Hyatt Place breakfast as a result of the trials. If they comment, I’ll be sure to update here. At least for now, this seems like good news.

I’m sure that the test was done to see if Hyatt could gain some incremental revenue, or at least enjoy cost-savings from eliminating the free hot breakfast without losing many guests in the process. However, 65% of family travelers say that free breakfast is one of the most important factors in deciding where to stay on their vacations, so free breakfast matters…even if it isn’t great. I don’t know exactly how many Hyatt Places guests are families, but based on the demographics I see in the mornings on some of our Hyatt Place stays, I’m not so sure that the results would pan out in Hyatt’s favor.

Here’s to hoping this is the last we hear of a pay-to-play breakfast concept at Hyatt Place properties. Have you happened to encounter any other Hyatt Place properties testing paid breakfast?

  1. I was very surprised when Dallas North handed me a meal voucher due to my status and the fact that I’m a regular at that hotel…and surprised that no blogger had written about it, I think I passed it on to Gary and it’s been fun seeing news that I ‘broke’. Thanks for following up with them. Hopefully Hyatt realizes that breakfast is NOT worth much, especially not $10. The only thing I usually grab is a bagel and glass of juice.

  2. After the trial had started, I stayed at few Hyatt Places (where breakfast was free). when I submitted the tripadvisor review and Hyatt review for those hotels, I repeatedly mentioned that I heard about this trial , and if implemented, may force me to look for other hotel options. Every time, they responded saying that they will escalate it to Management. Looked like, they got many concerns like mine. Glad they decided to continue with free breakfast. Hope they wont limit free only to cash stays and charge for award stays.

  3. Wish the breakfasts at HP would improve. The “cage free” scrambled eggs have no taste and the consistency of very small pieces is unappetizing.

  4. Thank goodness as we at off on an excursion mid-June staying at a Hyatt Place, one main reason IS for the free breakfast !!!

  5. A trusted source in a position of prominence at one of the properties mentioned shared “the trial” was a nightmare to enforce, guests were shocked and very dissatisfied and an overwhelming number of satisfaction surveys were negative due to this change. He surmised the property was chosen due to its proximity to large companies and business clientele. He, for one, was very happy to see the complimentary breakfast return.
