Last Day to Book Delta Awards to Caribbean and Mexico from 12,000 Miles Round Trip

Delta SkyMiles is a unique frequent flyer program in that their award pricing can be laughably horrific, but at other times their award prices are virtually unbeatable. At least once a month or so they have award flash sales where they drop the award price of some routes to very attractive levels. One of these sales to Latin America and the Caribbean is scheduled to wrap up today, June 20, 2018.

The published parameters of the sale are that the discounted award travel dates are September 15 – November 15, 2018, but the reality is that I see low award prices going into early 2019 in some cases. Playing around with some destinations and flexible dates is the best way to see what is available from your area, but I’ll give a sampling of what I saw available as of this morning.

Houston – Cancun

  • Economy from 14,000 miles round trip
  • Delta Comfort from 20,000 miles round trip
  • First Class from 34,000 miles round trip

Houston – Puerto Vallarta

  • Economy from 18,000 miles per round trip

LAX – Mexico City

  • Economy from 12,000 miles per round trip
  • Delta Comfort from 2,000 additional miles each direction

Austin – Cancun

  • Economy from 14,000 miles per round trip

JFK – Cancun

  • Economy from 12,000 miles per round trip

JFK – Nassau

  • Economy from 20,000 miles per round trip

JFK – Bermuda

  • Economy from 12,000 miles per round trip

Boston – Cancun

  • Economy from 12,000 miles per round trip

Be aware that in a few cases the initial price I saw on the flexible dates calendar was not actually there when I went to book, so don’t start the travel celebrations until you select individual flights. There are additional origins and destinations on sale, so I would not consider this an exhaustive list by any stretch. If you are dreaming of adding a passport stamp to your collection and visiting somewhere warm and sunny this fall or winter, it is worth a few minutes of searching today.

For those looking to book for a whole family, know that is absolutely possible with this sale. As a quick example, here is a long weekend trip right after Thanksgiving from JFK to Cancun. The awards I priced out are on nonstop flights for a family of four at just 48,000 SkyMiles plus taxes…total. For giggles, I priced out that same trip out of Newark using United miles and it rang in at 230,000 miles plus taxes with no nonstop flights available. The JetBlue options were nonstop flights, but the prices started at 141,600 points plus taxes. American Airlines wanted an insane 320,000 miles plus taxes, and that was with a connection on the outbound.

If you want to stretch your miles for a family trip, this is exactly how to accomplish that goal. Those comparative prices tell you just how good this Delta sale truly is if some of the discounted routes are on your radar.

Those running short of Delta SkyMiles can transfer them in at a 1:1 ratio from the Amex Membership Rewards program and cards such as The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card or The Business Platinum® Card.
