Strategically picking up credit card welcome bonuses is a key part of my family’s miles and points strategy. When bonuses are increased, and the miles or points awarded are really valuable to us, we will pull the trigger on new cards a few times a year. Since you can’t typically just get the same bonus over and over again, you probably want to try and get cards when the offers are at their peaks whenever possible.

Along those lines, the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus credit card launched in May with a limited-time bonus of 100,000 Marriott Reward points after $5,000 in purchases on the card in the first 3 months. If you want this increased 100K bonus, this is your last chance for now as the offer is set to end on July 12, 2018. Learn more.

Perks of the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card

Obviously, the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus credit card is attractive right now because of its 100,000 point bonus, but the card is probably a keeper beyond just the first year for many travelers. Some of the built-in perks include:

  • Annual Free Night Award (valued up to 35,000 points) every year beginning on the first account anniversary. For me, this makes the $95 annual fee much more palatable.
  • Earn 6x points at Marriott hotels and 2x elsewhere
  • Marriott Silver Elite Status awarded automatically and Gold Elite Status awarded if you spend $35,000 on the card each anniversary year.
  • Beginning in 2019, this card awards you 15 elite night credits each calendar year. Note that this does not stack with elite nights awarded by other similar cards. In other words, you can’t get 15 night credits from having this card and another 15 from a SPG card.

How to use 100,000 Marriott Reward points

Since it is already mid-July, the reality is that you will not get these 100,000 bonus Marriott points deposited in your account before the combined Marriott and Starwood award chart that launches in August. That means that the new award chart is where you should focus when brainstorming how to use these points.

Some Starwood and Marriott properties are going up in award category beginning in August, but others are getting cheaper or staying at about the same award price. Notably, if you are targeting the higher end resorts, those will become substantially less expensive on points beginning in August through early 2019. For bookings made from August 2018 until early 2019, for as far out at the schedule allows, you can book even the super high-end resorts for 60,000 Marriott points per night. This is much lower than the current equivalent of up to 270,000 Marriott points per night for some of the top tier properties. Once early 2019 arrives, Marriott will introduce an 8th category tier that will again increase the price of these properties, though not to the levels they were at before.

St. Regis Punta Mita

Being able to book properties such as the St. Regis Punta Mita, St. Regis Princeville in Kauai, St. Regis New York, St. Regis Bali, St. Regis Bora Bora, and St. Regis Maldives for 60,000 points per night would be a great use of your points, especially if you are working to get to 240,000 Marriott points in order to book five award nights at these properties with the fifth award night free. Remember that your Starwood points will convert to Marriott Reward points at a 3x ratio, so if you already had 40,000 SPG points, those will become 120,000 Marriott points when the programs combine in August.

Marriott points will continue to be very useful at the lower and middle ends of the award chart with Category 1 properties available starting at 7,500 points per night (as low as 5,000 points per night when peak and off-peak dates are launched in 2019). At the middle end of the category range, lots of properties will be bookable for about 35,000 Marriott points per night or less either using points or the Category 1 – 5 certificates.

Examples of those mid-range properties include:

  • Westin Snowmass
  • Atlantis, Coral Towers, Autograph Collection
  • Delta Hotels Whistler Village Suites
  • JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort & Spa
  • The Westin Puntacana Resort & Club
  • St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino
  • The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa
  • Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay

These properties, generally speaking, offer families some great vacation destination options for a reasonable number of points. With the fifth night free, you could book a five-night family vacation at these sort of properties for just 140,000 Marriott Rewards points, which will be within striking distance with a 100,000 point welcome bonus. You can and should check out the new category assignments that come into play in August so you can brainstorm how to use your 100,000 Marriott Reward points.

In terms of who is eligible for this card, the terms indicate that the product is not available to current Marriott Rewards Premier cardholders or previous Marriott Rewards Premier cardholders who got a welcome bonus in the last 24 months. This card is also subject to Chase 5/24 rules, which means that if you opened five or more new credit card accounts across all banks in the last 24 months you likely will not be approved for this card.

Comments

  1. There’s a potentially better offer for some people that awards 2 free nights + $200 credit + no AF first year and lower spend.

  2. I have an offer to upgrade to this for 10k points – is it a different product such that i can have both and potentially get the 100k?
